Struggled today. Found a ton of tater chips early, left those to go find substantial fish. Never could put anything together to speak of. We did find one spot we circled on and picked at them, that produced 9 fish. One was a dink, two 12” fish, and six 14-15” fish. Fished from 7fow-16fow. Bigger fish were 13-16fow. Kept 14 from 8.5+. Oh well, can’t win them all. Name: A6974CF1-B355-404F-99DA-ABA571A6C8AF.jpg

Did a lot better than me pulling cranks. Shad have not schooled up yet on main lake like they do during the summer. Very scattered yesterday. Won't be long though. Nice catch for a tough day.

Thanks, I keep trying to put things together. I need to start keeping a log book. I always say I'm going to, and never do. Always trying to piece things together. Sounds like you had a good trip.

What kind of boat were you in? I saw where you mentioned about going yesterday, but never saw anyone that looked like they were pulling cranks. I kept an eye out. I haven't fished HR much, this is only the second time actually fishing it. I've netted bait there several times years ago, to striper fish with on Norman. That said, I'd have bet $$ that I'd have 3-5 rods bow over several times based on the graph. After the 2nd or 3rd time of trolling through a wad of them, I told dad I bet we were coming through schools of 1/2lb gizzard shad. I was telling @pete this last night and he brought it up too, which made me feel better and confirmed my suspicions.

Bite was funny yesterday though. The bite was super subtle. They'd tap it a couple times then slowly bend it back, or just bend it enough that the rod was bent a little further than normal. Missed a lot of fish. Then again, lots of small fish. I caught one that I couldn't even figure out how it got the Slider in it's mouth, and crappies have big mouth/body ratios lol.

That said, each one of those 14's hit like a freight train. Dad was cussing one because he thought it was "another dad-blamed catfish". Then he had another that was "a d*** largemouth" because it was pulling and jumped a few times head shaking....guess he couldn't tell silver from green.

Another interesting thing. Only time Ive ever fished an NC lake an caught more white crappies than black. Probably the other time Ive ever even caught double digit white crappie numbers, though most were peanuts.

I was in a red Lund deep v. Fished all the way down second creek, all down left side of main lake and all the way into crane till I got to the island.
