HEY GUYS!!
Has anyone fished Haw River? Trying to find the best place to fish from but not finding alot of places to park and fish off this river. Can anyone give me directions or send me a map on places to fish from off the river?
I'm trying to expand my fishing areas besides the Reservoir and Oak Hollow Marina.
There’s an area in Pittsboro called Bynum Beach.... it’s just off of 15-501, south of the river. In the late spring and summer, it can be a great place to wade fish for small bass, bream, channel cats, bullhead, and the occasional crappie or white perch. Most of the water is maybe waist level or below, but the deeper sections of the river can be over your head. I usually wade it in my kayak pdf, just so I have some boyancy if I step in a deeper hole and have a way to carry a small tackle box if I fish with my ultralight or fly rod.
You need to keep an eye on the water level for the river before you go, as rain can very much affect the quality of the fishing. I have an app called River Data (iOS) and bookmark the flow indicator on the Haw, near the Bynum area. You really need a gauge height of about 3.5 ft or less for the water to be clear and really good for fishing, which means no heavy rains for at least 2 weeks or more.
I can catch a ton of fish on small (1-2”) white curlytail grubs, size 4-6 spinners, or red worms fished with a spilt shot on the bottom. There’s an amazing diversity of fish in this river and I’ve enjoyed some really nice mornings / evenings fishing this spot as the sun rises or sets. Hope this helps!
