Thread: Lake Mattamuskeet

I'd call that local camp up there. Hopefully someone will chime in with the name. I personally fished it many years ago, in the spring. I fished that canal right by the Ranger/Warden station. I'd assume you can catch crappie in the deeper part of it right now.

I have never personally fished it, my if i is only hear say, but I’ve heard there are some real nice crappie in there and that there favorite time to fish it was when it was colder because all the fish would be in the one deep hole in the lake, take it for what it’s worth, if I lived close I’d give it a shot

I looked at Google Earth and could not see where you could launch a boat there.

I found this on NC Wildlife website. I have never fished here but have always wanted to give it a whirl. Good luck if you go.

State fishing regulations, size limits, and license requirements apply. A freshwater fishing license is required to fish at the refuge. Please note that there is a change to the minimum size limit for black crappie from 8" to 10" and largemouth bass from 14" to 16" for 2018. The lake is closed to all boats November 1 through the end of February. The lake opens to boats on March 1.

Lake Mattamuskeet is a very shallow lake allowing only small boats access to approximately 40,000 acres of prime warmwater fishing. In addition to the lake, there are miles of canals available for bank fishing. Favorite species to catch are largemouth bass, white perch, crappie, sunfish, catfish and blue crabs. In a lake closed during prime picking season like nov to March, I’d put good money on some true hogs live there, 40,000 acres is a decent hole of water, my curiosity has been peeked

Most people don't fish the lake, as it's only a few feet deep in most places. I heard it's very easy to run aground in there. The canals have plenty of water in them. Try posting your question on the NC Angler board, and see if you get any response there.

Crappie are caught in the canals with many folks fishing near the headquarters. If I recall correctly it is Feb when folks start hitting it.
