Yeah, I've seen them in many different formations, including stacked vertically. Late Summer & early Fall I've seen large Shad circling in a tight tornado formation from the surface down several feet ... and the fishing sucked.

Your 'Bird' seems to be showing a featureless bottom, and no fish in the area ... so could that be the reason the Shad are not balled up tight ??

A good way to tell the difference with your fish finder is switch to 2D and see if you see arches. 2D sonar frequency cannot differentiate small targets like shad so that's why they show up as a blob but if it's a bigger fish it shows up as an arch. Downscan / Sidecan frequency is high enough to pick out very small targets, that's why the ball of baitfish shows up as individual targets on downscan/sidescan.

Also with downscan you might miss gamefish feeding on baitfish but with 2D you'll see the blob and then some bigger arches around the blob those are gamefish.

Thanks! I am still learning to find gamefish on the SI/DI. This helps a lot.
