Default FYI: New Gates Installed at Shearon Harris Lake Boat Ramps

BE ADVISED!!! Yesterday, while on a green carp fishing trip to Harris Lake, I noticed the installation of a spanking new gate going into the Crosspoint Boat Ramp in Corinth with a sign affixed to the open gate saying Temporarily Closed. Now, I'm not saying that the ramp is closed... I'm saying there's a new gate installed with a Sign. This morning I called the fine folks at NC Division of Wildlife Resources, Boating Access Division and they confirmed the gate installations at both Crosspoint and Holleman's Boat Ramps were done for the purposes of having control of the boat ramps if necessary in the event of weather emergency, power plant emergency, Covid 19 mitigation or any other reason that might cause boating access to be dangerous or otherwise restricted. The very helpful lady that I spoke to also stated that there were no plans whatsoever to close for any reason, but they did want to be prepared in the event that such circumstances did arise.

    What do you think?

Sounds like good prior planning to me.

Oh, I don't (at all) dispute or question the "safety" aspects of installing the gates. In fact: It remains somewhat curious to me why gates were not installed before now.
On the subject of safety: I do believe something should be done to limit the number of boats and/or types of recreational boat traffic that's allowed on that "sized" reservoir.

I think Holleman has had a gate for quite a while. Never seen it closed, but I think I remember there being one.

I have been fishing Harris for about 5 years and there has been a gate there for quite some time. I have only seen it closed when they were repaving the parking lot and the docks.

I think I remember late 80's there being a cable gate. It's private property Duke Energy is nice enough to allow the public to use so its not surprising they would want gates. The lake's purpose is for power production.

Evidently you fish from Holleman's boat ramp... like JordanLimit said: ..."there's been a gate there for a while." I never fish Holleman's, so I wouldn't have seen that gate... but don't recall any gate other than a crude cable gate (a while back) (as tdobien said) prior to now at Crosspoint. I can't image that I've been there (Crosspoint) so many times and just didn't see it... of course with aging comes such strange and mysterious oversights.

Dwight, we're catchin' a few at both Harris and Jordan every trip, but so far nothing of any real size, which is a bit unusual to me. But, since it has been about seven years since I've been on the water... I'm sure it will take some time to get my hand back on it. The best thing about these green carp trips is: It gets me on the water and gives me lots of opportunity to watch the crappie and get better prepared for when I turn my attention to crappie fishing in September. I'm definitely seeing plenty of crappie.
