    Default Trolling Motor for canoe

A good friend (non fisherman) wants to get a trolling motor for his parents in Highlands to use on a canoe in a local pond. Any recommendations? I have almost no experience with canoes.

The MinnKota 30# worked for my 15' aluminum canoe. Once a put a motor on it, the state wanted me to register it.

Thanks Kelbro. What battery did you use? Would a standard lawnmower battery do the job?

I used a small car battery. Never needed to run that motor over a power setting of 1 or 2 (out of 5). Lawnmower battery might work but you would be recharging it often. Lightweight though and easy to carry. Maybe look at some sort of solar charger to keep it topped off.

It would be used by an older couple, so something lighter would be important.

The small car battery will provide many hours of cruising at the low settings.

    Default Trolling Motor for canoe

I bought a 12v 35AH battery as a back-up battery for a long trolling trip in my 14 ft canoe. It weighs 22 lbs and is about 1/2 the weight of my larger 55AH main battery. If cost isn’t an issue, they make lithium batteries that are typically 1/2 the weight of comparable sized lead acid batteries with twice the power, but they cost a small fortune. I have one for my fishfinder after killing multiple lead acid batteries. It works great.

A 30lb thrust Minn Kota Endura is probably the lightest / most economical trolling motor for a canoe, with a max speed of 2.5-3 mph.

My buddy says his parents' canoe is not squared off at the back. So, how should he go about mounting it? Pics would be great.
Thanks for your guidance on this.

Clamped on the side with a 1x4 on the inside to keep from denting the aluminum.
