Default Tie balloon to crappie? New fishing technique?

Anyone tried tieing a balloon to crappie and let it swim back to school?
This sounds very interesting to try!

we used to do that with white perch to stay with school when I was a kid, we used to hook them with the balloon attached

Yes, about 50 years ago. And old man told me about this. Tried it a couple of times with little success.

We tried it one day, we used a water bottle, it moved around for about 30 mins. then stopped, we trolled around it on our passes, no fish. Left it for a hour, came to get it and pulled it in, it was little hard to pull up because it was dead buried in the mud???? Our guess was a turtle, what do you think?

The two times I tried it, we were drift fishing for crappie and the balloon just stayed with the boat.

That's desperate but if you don't want to find them yourself then I guess it might work! I have heard it but never tried it.
