    Default Fun on Jordan

With the tournament season starting next Saturday, Charles and I decided to have some fun on Jordan and get a few crappie for the freezer. We kept 26, nothing over 12.5" and caught over 75 easily. Add about 15 cats and a few largemouth in the mix as well. One very interesting thing--not a single white perch the whole day. Maybe the cats are helping reduce the perch population.

Could certainly see the lake getting ready for Fall fishing. To me, it's the best time of the year. The tourists are at football games and a lot of fishermen are getting ready to deer hunt. The fish are feeding heavily and makes for a fun time on the water.

Look at the first three pictures--they are even up in 6' water, but just starting. The best are still a little deeper.

You know Fall is right around the corner when the shad start gathering in huge schools. There sure seems to be a big shad and crappie population this year. In the past years, I would have thought a lot of the individual fish we were seeing were a lot of perch. This year, I think they are mostly crappie. The jagged shape on the bottom is from way too many boats out water skiing. The up and down motion makes for a jagged looking bottom.

As always great pictures and descriptions of what your seeing. I'm really surprised to see all those fish up in that shallow water. For me I like your last shot the best, it's more I guess what I'm used to fishing.

Long-lining jigs--no minnows on the boat. We like to troll at .8 in deeper water and up to 1.2 in shallow water.

Thanks for the info. I've tried long-lining at Harris without success, still trying to learn. Do you use a certain weight jig and let out a certain amount of line?

Jig wieght coupled with boat speed and length of line out determine depth in longlining you just gotta go out and figure it out, time on the water is the best teacher

Kevin said it right--takes time on the water. If you put in at Farrington and take a right up Bush Creek, there is an old RR with an elevated embankment. At normal depth, it is about 10' deep. Charles and I took one morning and went back and forth over the RR. We kept slowing down until we finally hit dirt. Problem was, we lost half of our jigs. The RR ties may still be in the water. We re-tied and went again a little faster, but still hit bottom. On the next pass, we finally had just a little tip bounce on one rod. Perfect for us.

There are times of the year you may want a bigger jighead and larger grub, so you will need to speed up some. Other time maybe a lighter jig and will have to slow down to get the depth you want. Find a place on Harris or Jordan that has a flat around 10' and start experimenting. Keep a notebook with you to write down some of the combinations of speed and jighead that works at this depth.

The next task is to figure out what is the right color for that day.

    How do like your 360.
And do you have to be siting dead still to read it?

Love, love the 360. It's not the answer in water over 10', but is very good in the shallow water. While putting along with the gas motor, I use the SI to locate an area holding fish. Usually with just the trolling motor I will use the 360 to zero in on them.

My crappie fishing friends if you don't have a Garmin livescope on your boat you are missing out. It is just what it says LIVE.
