Default How Deep on Night Stalks?

Thinking about doing some late evening/night fishing this weekend. How deep do you put your bait when you fish at night? I'm assuming the fish will remain up in the water column, and shad will be near the surface (especially if I use a light). Do you keep your bait super shallow (1-2ft) or go deeper?

I understand I'll have to do some experimentation to find the right depth just looking for general starting guidelines so I go in swinging

    Thanks!

Your right, try different depths until you catch one. Then try to repeat the depth. Last weekend we were fishing 25+ feet of water and were catching the bigger fish about 15' down fishing just where the outside of the light meets the darker water.

I would start if set up in deep water at the bottom with one or two rods and set another couple higher up say 15 foot or so. Adjust them as you need to. We sat up in 30 foot of water last Friday night and immediately started to catch fish deep, then they moved up in the column. We finished the night around 15 to 6 foot from the top in the column. If varies from trip to trip on conditions. You need to make adjustments to find them. I have two types of lights, one is submersible and the other is 12 volt inverter with the 26 watt curly bulb. I keep the lights high on the rails to give me light in the boat and over the water. The submersible is just under the water about 6 inches. The purpose is to get the bait to the top of the column and fish to rise under them. Hope you have good luck and be safe!

I like to anchor in25-30 fow if possible. Not right over a brush or right against a dock. Let the lights draw the bait to you. Where there is bait then the fish will follow. I start 1 rod to bottom and 3-4 cranks up. Next one is 6-8 cranks. I use 4 rods and stagger them like that. The fish will tell you where they are. If you are on Wylie be a line watcher! Last two stalks the fish have been biting real light. Like just a tic and that’s it. I use 6lb. line and very light weight. Keeping boat still is a main key. Make sure you got good anchors. It is tough with all the boat traffic even at night. Good Luck to ya. Come out and join us sometime. We do a lot of nitestalk on Wylie. We got one coming June8. On High Rock Lake. It is in N.c. but a Great Lake to fish. Come join us anytime. Keep check on the post about NiteStalkin.

Mac Crappie, didnt take me long to fill my empty seat. Hopefully we'll all catch a stringer full of quality fish on the 8th.

At night, we like to anchor either or a tree or under a bridge at about 18-24 fow. Like other night fishers, put several rods out to get specific depths, most of the time on either side of 12 feet. Good Luck

It just depends on your light and how deep the water is. Less than 10 foot of water you're going to catch fish that don't mind getting in the brigher light. White bass. White perch. Channel cats and etc.

If you're in 15 plus feet of water, you're in crappie teritorry. Usually 10 to 14 foot is a good place to start with your bait. Bigger fish will usually be deeper.

When night fishing with a light, it is best to concentrate on areas that get a ton of fish traffic. Points. Humps at the mouth of creeks or off main lake channels. You can even fish in open water. Most all fish will move at night. The more moon, the more they move. Moonlight just competes with your light.
