    Default High Rock questions

I have a place at Lake Norman but I’m thinking of moving to High Rock. For those that fish both for crappie, how would you compare the two?

As for High Rock, where on the lake would be the best location: considering boat traffic, central to fishing locations, boat ramp access, avoiding mud, etc.

All input is welcome and appreciated.

    Thank you,
    TW

I just set up a rv in the back of crane creek and love it. I was on Tillery. High rock is the best crappie lake around in my opinion. Not many times I can’t go out for a few hours and catch 20 to 40 crappie and I usually pull crankbaits.

    Sandy,
PM me a cell number and I will give you a call to discuss. I am in the campground off goodman lake rd. Really nice campground and all lots are waterfront and the majority have
piers. There is also a big campground next cove down at Tammarac Marina.

My only recommendation is to find a spot where you can get out on the main lake when the lake is full. The spots cwright mentioned are good. It easy to get under the bridges on Crane, Second and Swearing Creeks. Depending on your boat, you might not have much issue with Flat Swamp or Abbotts creek. They're about 2.5 feet off the water when the lake is full.

I know some people will disagree, but to me, High Rock is probably the best fishing lake in NC for quantity and quality of fish for most any species. High Rock does have its bad years from time to time but it tends to bounce back rather quickly. Badin can get shad poor at times. So can Tillery. Sometimes High Rock has too many....

    Just my penny.

I agree with sundance about the bridges. We fish out of a big pontoon and just lower the top and have no problems in crane, but when I use to put in every time I came to fish I usually used flat swamp because it was closest to me. I like fishing flat swamp, but had lots of problems trying to get under the bridge to the main lake. Most of the time I was stuck in flat swamp.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a Mako center console which probably sits around 4' above the water. I was thinking of looking at Crane Creek as my thoughts are that it is less prone to get muddy when there's a lot of rain.

Are there low bridges in Flat Swamp?

    Thank you,
    TW

Go to savehighrocklake.org and it will tell you all bridge clearances.

The railroad bridge at Flat Swamp has the lowest clearance of any overhead obstruction as far as i have seen. I went to savehighrock.org and did a little math for the actual clearance. So today the lake is 3.09 feet below full pool and the clearance is 5.44ft. So 5.44 minus 3.09 will leave 2.35 ft. at normal pool. Pretty close to what Sundance said. To be sure this lake is full of crappie. Good luck in your fishing.

While we are asking questions about High Rock..............me and my daughter have been wanting to give it a try. She really enjoys it more when we go to new lakes (yes she is almost 20 but I still love taking her to new places). Can anyone tell me best boat ramps? We will be coming from Moore county so we will be approaching the lake from the south on the east side. Thanks.
