1 use a Sabiki rig and catch you some bait.
    2. use cut bait and fish the bottom. the blues stomachs are covered in mud when you pull them up which is a sign they are on the bottom.
3 fish the main channels in the main lake.
    good luck and have fun

i not sure where you will be coming from but the American and Hickory shad are biting good in the Ronoke river at the weldon boat ramp. it would be fun to go there first and catch the shad, then load up and go to Gaston for the cat fish.
if you are not familiar with the Ronoake river be careful around the boat ramp. there are some big rocks in the water. ask questions at the ramp before you launch.
