I have been using cedar, I get about 12 years out of them here in Oklahoma.

I completely agree, cedar is great, but there are two issues with that.

1. The proper cedar (2x6 or 2x8 rough cut) that I did find is going to be expensive for the sizes of beds she wants. There is some at Lowes, but it is 1x4 through 1x8 boards. I feel that is pretty thin and won't last long.
2. She found this.... How-to instructions for constructing galvanized metal raised garden beds and now she want's these made. lol.

I built one short one last year out of the 1x6 boards from lowes. Just to get the project going, and it seems okay so far. The 4x4 posts i used were douglas fir, or redwood, i think.

I was just wondering if anyone around here had an idea of where to find some thicker steel, or happened to have some lying around. I'm going to check out the ReUse place in Durham, then go over to Lowe's afterwards for "Plan B".

How aesthetic does it need to appear? At my house I just berm the soil. But another material option is vinyl siding...lasts indefinitely. With supports, you can raise a bed with it. It's perfect for isolating running plants like mint as well. Check a habitat for humanity store for materials..much cheaper an for a great cause.
