I have thought for a long time that bass didn't do as good as they said, I do Like the way the MFL does it weighing the fish and releasing it immediately!

So a very comprehensive study says fish caught in tournaments have at least a 45% morality rate from being caught, raced around a lake all day, brought to the scales in a goldfish bag, held up to show everyone how cool you are, and then thrown back in the lake expecting to survive.....but they're concerned about the economic impact that's nice. What the tournament anglers are really concerned about is how they are gonna feed their addiction. I fished some co-angler tournaments back in the day and drew a very successful pro. He said he can't go out and fish for fun anymore without money on the line. That's sad b/c to me fishing is not a sport it's a pastime.

That's the only way to do it for tournaments. I see these fish being held up at weigh ins and I'm like dude you know that thing is suffocating to death after being held in a live well all day.

That's why I never want to be a tournament fisherman or a guide, I don't want fishing to be a job. lol Tournaments bring out the worst in some people, the way they drive a boat and how they treat people and especially when they try to tell me what size of fish I can keep. lol
I think all tournament fish should be cleaned and given to a food pantry.
Definitely lowers the survival rate!
I just think it's funny everyone wants to complain about what other people like. Lots or most people hate Surf boats and while maybe not a fan they have as much right to the water as I do. I even Surfed a handful of times and it's a Blast! People hate jet skis but they are fun as heck and again legal so who am I to say they are bad?
I fished plenty of bass tourneys in the past, not so much anymore but if I wanted to keep the 5 fished I was weighing in (which was not very often) to eat I could so again if you enjoy tourneys go for it!
It reminds me of fishing and when it would be cold and laughing at the people on the golf course but when I'm playing golf I laugh at the people fishing!![]()

The complaint is how tournaments are negatively impacting the fishery. If someone wants to fish tournaments, great, but let's do it responsibility. Right now the tournament industry is highly irresponsible with some lakes seeing upwards of 500 a year. The Auburn University study was complaint driven, and the study validated the complaints. Way more bass die as a result of tournaments than fishermen keeping them to eat, and it's not even close. I hope Alabama goes through with this regulation it is much needed. Hey people like to drive fast but there's still a speed limit.

think I will chime in, I have fished maybe 2 small club tournaments, both times one of the fishermen cheated, one affected my big fish win, one of them won the tournament and started fishing two hours early had fish in the boat and the tournament director his friend let him win, that did it, Oh and the few fish I caught I took home and ate them.... but I still support anyone who wants to tournament fish because most are honest and just want to see how they stack up to a bunch of others. as far as fish survival rate, it has to be low. so like joe said clean them give them to food pantry, if allowed if not don't clean them and give them to the pantry then stay and help clean them ... jm2c
