    Default Outboard problem

First I want to thank Greg (Hogster) for the assist at the ramp when we got towed in Saturday as my daughter doesn’t back a trailer.
Now the the question. I have a 2006 Mercury 2-stroke with a frustrating problem. Of course it is the type that only happens at the most inopportune time. (Like downstream from Warsaw with a lot of current. Sometimes when I have to start the motor after fishing for a while I will have to choke the motor as if it was cold. Once I get it started it will run just fine. Then there was yesterday. It just wouldn’t start no matter what. Usually I can wait 5-10 minutes and it will start but not convenient in a 5 mph current. The frustrating part is I got home and I started with no problem. Bang head. Thinking about replacing the coil packs, spark plugs and the fuel line. Any ideas? This has happened on occasion but never had to be towed.

Hogster is the MAN!! He has helped me out more times than I can count. Is your Merc fuel injected or carborated? Injected, I would check fuel and water filters. Also is your bulb staying pumped up? If you have carbs, maybe a needle sticking?

Sounds like a fuel issue to me, probably won't be a coil pack if it runs fine when it's started unless one is cracked and drawing moisture. Had two friends with kind of the same problem, one had a fuel line that was coming apart on the inside and blocking fuel and the other one had a defective kill switch.
They both replaced a crap load of parts and finally took it to a mechanic and they finally figured it out.

Thanks Speck. I’m in agreement with bigby as the coil packs aren’t all that old. One is getting close though because it will occasionally bog down on the hole shot and they are easy and not that expensive. They are 4-5 years old so it’s about time anyway. I really think it will be the file line. In regards to your your question, I thank it is carbonated but It m pretty stupid when it comes to anything mechanical beyond wiring a trailer.

I had a very similar issue with my 75hp Merc where it would run fine, then you shut down for a while and fish, and then it won't start again.

And then it will and you'll think everything is fine again.

    Rinse and repeat.

Turned out to be a bad stator. BUT...this was on a 1996 motor. Probably failed due to age. Just another thing to think about. But I'd trust the guts of the previous guys before listening to me.

Oh and...Hogster's a helluva guy, even though he don't post no more!!

Jeff I think it is fuel. When we were out and it almost did not start I could smell gas like it was almost flooding out. Then when it started it took a minute to run smooth.

There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

When I complained about mine having to be choked after sitting while fishing, the tech recommended raising it up out of the water more than normal. It seemed to help, but then I took it in to be looked at. I'm not trying to worry you, but they found this with my Evinrude XP150

    1. Bad coil
    2. Blown head gasket

It ran ok when I got it warmed up, but would not start for crap. I didn't like the way it was coming out of the hole either.
