Does anyone use the AGM batteries for their trolling motor? Just wondering if they are worth the extra money?
I get the Dura last brand- the work great no filling with acid.
Like most things it’s a cost versus benefit deal. If you have need for batteries that can’t be recharged overnight, as on a trip away from home, they have an advantage. If you tend to brutalize your batteries with long days in very windy conditions then AGMs would be helpful. Personally I haven’t graduated to them yet opting to replace my standard wet cell batteries on a more frequent schedule. AGMs don’t like being charged at a high rate, most built in chargers are ok. On average, and I emphasize “average”, you can expect 2-4 years on wet cells, AGMs seem to stretch that to 6-7 years. With AGMs you get rid of acid, as someone that had a wet cell explode while charging that interests me, what a mess.

For the record, I had an AGM explode, it was at least 6 years old. Yes it was also a mess. Each time I buy I do a cost evaluation and make the decision, right now I am running 3 wet and two AGM (not in same boat) Happy with both
I’m currently running 2 31 series AGMs for my trolling motor. These replaced the 27 series AGMs I had which are now in my sons boat. I’ve never had a issue with AGM’s. I have fried killed murdered the old wet cells in the past. Secure them properly and use the correct gauge wiring and you will be good for many years. I’ve seen a lot of boats with under sized wiring for trolling motors. Don’t cheap out when it comes to wiring Most need 6 gauge wiring This gives you steady constant power and no risk of frying things due to amp/ current draw. Just my 2 cents
