No surgery for me but my best friend has. You've waited this long just do whatever the Dr says. Everyone recovers at their own pace. Be patient you'll be back in the boat in no time.

I'm just curious. I haven't been able to do a lot of fishing for a year or so because of sciatica. I just had lower back surgery Thursday. The doc says no driving/ 15 lb limit for 2 weeks and then get evaluated every couple weeks. I had my L5 and S1 disc worked on. If anybody has had anything like this done how long before you could do anything. Thanks

I have, and let me tell you,,, Do exactly what the medical team tells you to do, you don't, you push it you may want to borrow my wheel chair and walker,,,, I did what they said and now I am just slightly crippled in the back,,,, oh and 8 to 10 weeks of patiences will serve you well.
Well I really appreciate the advice. I'm on day 3 and bored out of my mind. A guy can only watch so much gunsmoke. I'm following his instructions but I know why he really stressed to me about the recovery part. I could see a guy just doing what he wanted. Thanks again.
I had surgery for the same thing back in 2010. Still have some leg pain. You will watch enough fishing and hunting shows that they will all become reruns. I went back to work after about 4-4 1/2 weeks if I remember right. I had a job then which was about 3 hours of desk work and 5-7 hours on the floor. So I could sit for a while and then get out to walk around for a while. Physical Therapy was rough but helped in the long run.

I had that exact surgurey! New disc and stabilizers. Not fun, but do your PT and do what the doc says! I had mine in 14 and it's still a little weak. But I'm TONS BETTER than before!
I just had the same surgery in the same spot 6 weeks ago. I had a similar surgery 10 years ago a little higher on the spinal column. I have enjoyed pain free rehab after the first week (it is a suck sandwich, just keep on the pain meds). I'm back to work just this week.
Then...walk, walk, walk! When you get tired of walking, take a walk! That is the best rehab there is. I dropped some weight and that was a big help as well. If you have access to ice, keep that incision and back muscles as cold as you can stand it. I used one of those ice machines with the circulating cold water pads every day. I think that may have helped my healing process.
As to the fishing, my doc told me the main thing is to pay very close attention to the weight you are lifting and the technique used to lift. Use your legs, obviously. And if they say don't lift anything over 10 or 20 pounds, just realize these folks are probably a lot better educated than us (speaking for myself!!!!!).
When I asked him about crappie fishing, he first asked me if I was going to be pulling in any 30 lbers. Well, let's just say, I'm what they call "Crappie Catching Challenged" sometimes. I prefer the acronym, "CCC", it sounds much better! So reward yourself and do some fishing, but be careful. And take a walk when you get to the boat ramp!!!!
I believe in catch and release.....right into the grease!!!!!Spiderdog62 thanked you for this post
FOUR (4) times in lumbar area. Last one 12 yrs ago was a Microdiskectomy?, and haven't had a bad day since at age 81.
Sure beats going through the pain every day!
Thanks for the advice. Your right about walking. If you don't pretty regular you sure pay later on when you try.
I had a 5 level fusion back in January and am very limited until January of 2018. Hopefully I'll at least be able to go fishing. Good luck to you and like was previously stated, follow the doc's instructions.
