Thread: Tackle maintenance

I for one never keep a jig hook long enough for it to rust. Another thing is that our tackle bags are kept inside the house. And if they do get wet we dry them out before they are put away. We have several of those plastic boxes that are in our bags and things like crank baits are each in their own compartment. Most of our plastic boxes are 24 compartment boxes. Both the wife and I have our large bags then we each have a smaller bag that have small double sided boxes with hooks, weights, plastic skirts and jig heads for crappie. Then we have a large bag that is what we call our master bag that has 9-360 plastic boxes in it with jig skirts. We don't normally put it in the boat.

The best thing to do is to go fishing more often. Inspect those plastic boxes as often as possible. Moisture gets trapped in those locked boxes. Gotta air em out once in a while.

I leave my live well lid open, If my tackle box get wet, I dump everything out.. hush bob..... I dump everything out and dry it in the sun if possible, if not paper towels and kitchen table... do not use a rusty hook, will only make you mad when it breaks and the big one gets away.... luck to ya

Air tight and water tight, use those types of containers and you wont have an issue. Second is to keep them out of sunlight as well, especially if you have plastic baits such as grubs and tubes in them, the sun breaks down the plastic over time and turns it into a gel and a very messy situation. Also, keep the inside of the boxes as dry as possible even if you have water tight boxes. This means that if your fishing and you swap a lure that is wet and put it into the box, and if you dont dry it out soon after the trip you will get corrosion on hooks and such. So take a minute after a trip and ensure everything is dry. Good luck to you.
