    Default New lake crappie fest

New friend took myself and a buddy to a small lake where he had some lmted success. We tried lake where we killed the big crappie during spawn and hoped to get a few and some of the nice channels it's known for but only caught one decent keeper and a one lb cat. It was a 30 minute drive and was able to have some walking tacos at local joint in between so it was good. We hit the lake and went where he said as he was busy and KABOOM as the outlaw says we found a school and started bringing 5hem in. I hooked first keeper but I was fishing where my bud said deep while friend looked at his ff and said they are hanging 6 to 8 feet and he proceeded to ketch next 10 quickly! I brought mine up and joined in the fun. This was 1 in pm w sun beating down on us and we quickly ran low on minnows. Yeah I usually kick minnow boys butt w jigs but today they wanted meat!

Funny thing was as we got low on them we cut them into 3 pieces and the crappie hit them more aggressively! Our new buddy came back from helping his daughter and brought us more minnows. But by then we had came to dock and jumped into lake and man it was refreshing! He joined us in water and we just hung out as we had two nice stringers of 10 to 12 inch keepers. We did get back out but action had slowed even with new lively minnows. Caught few more keepers and time to go.

Limit was 30 and both ended up keeping 20 or so. Threw back more than that as dinks.

Came back next day with another buddy and caught 20 keepers between 3 of us and several big cats which is what my buddy wanted for tempura catfish meal. We ended up back in the water swimming and our bud came later with big lunch from local dive bar. Life is good with good friends and right attitude. Not sure what locals thought when they drove up and saw 4 old farts hanging in the water w pink floating mats! Course we didn't care water was cool and so refreshing on a hot day.Name: 20210818_145636.jpg

    Fine report!
I'll smoke just about anything (in my smoker)
The fishing is always great. The catching varies.

as most of us hit the bigger public lakes we pass by lots o places that could hold good populations of crappie and other NTS. This type lake didn't look like much but we did so well and we didn't move from one spot so you know there are many more all around and it is just such a pretty setting. It was a bigger version of a private lake my third wife owned and that lake was loaded with bass and Biggest BG ever caught and always had a ball fishing there.

in the doldrums of hot summer time to go out and hit different places. I know of at least 4 more city lakes within 20 miles of my cabin that we are going to hit and see what's up with now. I know at least one of which buddy caught stringer of big crappie at up to a 3 lber! Which all get light pressure.
