Default IF you ketchn the spawning males on the bank where are the bigger females staging?

the most biggest question of the spring is where are the spawning males and when you get into those where should you look for the bigger females? have heard they would be at similar depth offshore directly out from males. Tried that and not had much success. Anyone have something they do that works consistantly? Inquiring minds need to know. thanks.

I think if you were to spider rig out from the bank a bit you would be able to learn that answer. It's always too tempting for me to catch them easy under a cork at this time to try it though.

You have heard correct, BUT, The girls are really spooked easily and will avoid any activity until the mood strikes to go. They do want to eat too and can move several hundred yards for a meal. They are not just waiting . One other thing to keep in mind as there are hundred more males to a few females. As in life when the girls decide to move they will draw in males from everywhere to where they want nesting to be.

Sounds like a good strategy then would be to cast with a bobber from the bank where the males are congregated at as far as one can starting at a foot or so and then gradually letting more line out till you get into them.

I let most all the females go and try to keep big males for the pan.

Yes this is true and I like to spider rig to cover more area too. Out in front of the coves and up and down the bank to possibly a point nearby. The boys are circling around watching. The girls don't really hang close to each other but will be near food during the pre spawn. When that magic temp hits it is a mass movement and if she has the boys around she can spawn out within an hour. They put a few here and a few there until she is spent on eggs, energy or fishing pressure.

I think most females roam deep water chasing shad and dont stay in the bank very long

Been catching the girls around 10 ft off the bank and deeper, around 18 inches today.
The eggs are runny and they are doing there thing.

so it seems like what they say was true for you here. heading to MTL as the spawn is on and will toss a few corks out with short lines and see if can pick up a few of the fat girls.
