    Default Transducer Location Question?

    Tranceducer Mount question:

I have a Helix 5 Chirp SI unit and recently bought an HDSI transducer unit to upgrade and hopefully get some more clarity.

Any advice on what you all think is the best location to install it of the back of my 1995 181dc Champion Bass Boat? Middle, side, hanging below the bottom where the water will be fast, etc? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!!!

I recommend mounting to the jack plate if you have one. Mounts are a little pricey, but if you are a DIY'er, you can fabricate one pretty easy. This raises the transducer just a touch and protects it more from stumps, trees, and rocks. It also saves extra holes in your transom. If you don't have a jack plate or want to mount to your transom, I also run a Champion and mounted as low as I could on the very rear of the transom, not the area near the drain holes. I also mounted on the port side of the engine and near the middle of the boat, not the edge. I did use a stern saver so I didn't drill directly into my transom. I don't think placement matters so much as long as you are happy with the picture you are getting on your electronics. I am sure others have better answers than I do, but this is my 2 cents.

I was told a few years back to get a stump jumper (made in Tight Wad Mo ) I didn't listen and it cost me another Transducer, depending on where you plan on fishing ( stump filled lakes ) you should look into, i did and haven't lost any since.

The Helix 5 has a break away mount. So you don't have to worry about purchasing a stump jumper. The recommended location is 15" from the center of the prop or maybe the outside of the prop. I want to also say the directions recommend that the bottom is level with the bottom or slightly hanging down.

That's what I remember about my transom-mounted 'ducer. Also that they recommended the starboard side (to the right of the motor) "for clockwise-rotating props". And while Bill scoffs at me, claiming that all props turn clockwise (unless in reverse), I figure they put those instructions in there for a reason.

Plus I'm way smarter than Bill, so...take that into account!

In the end, can't say that it matters so long as you're happy with the picture, as tyfoford said.

I always told Joe I’d show him where to mount his transducer

Should be on the end of a pole saw

Not sure if my helix 7 had a breakaway mount, but it didn't matter once it's broke away it's in danger of grabbing anything under your boat, and you don't always know it's hanging. For my two cents worth it worth it. I don't sell these I just bought it and I'm happy with it. Like I said stump filled lakes if your fishing open water there's no need for alarm. Better safe than sorry.

I recently purchased and installed a 5 & 7. I hit a stump and my picture went cattywompus, it still worked but was wrong. When I got back to the dock, it was flopping up and down on the mount. NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL THE CENTER SCREW, that makes it solid.

Some one made an outboard for a short time that ran counter clockwise. I'm thinking it was the weird bayliner hybrid outboard blended with an in&out. Was a flop of a motor. Was supposed to have the benefits of an inboard engine and space saving design of an outboard....

Stump jumpers are definitely one of the best set ups out there. But with my limited funds I went with a spring up bracket and shield, so far so good. Name: 20200814_202409.jpg
