Advice needed for fishing Lake of Ozarks with grandchildren
We will be vacationing with 6 y/o grandson on Niangua Arm of LOZ near bridge of US HWY 54 on 4th of July weekend. We have a fishing boat with GPS and Fish finders. We want to get our grandson into fishing. If the action is too slow he will likely turn to casting which will be a risk to all in the boat. Anything big enough to pull a bobber under would be great. I had hoped to take him to Truman Lake for crappies, but the water levels are extreme and I have never fished LOZ. Any suggestions would be appreciated

It WIll be dangerous to be out on the water during that time. The big boat traffic will be very bad. Get out very early in the morning and off the lake before 10am. I would be trolling if thats not an option then coves with conservation brush and docks are going to be it.

Don't really fish the lake but go down a few times a year for pleasure......you know the BIG and Go Fast boat thing. I've always caught bass on top water early morning in backs of coves away from the main lake. Pretty simple.
If you have dock access, a bobber with a small hook and a piece of canned corn will keep kids busy catching those little rock bass bluegill things all day. Even caught and occasional cat or two. A few times carp but hard to land on snoopy rods.

Last weekend the crappie bit very well trolling cranks early in the morning and later in the evening along bluffs and around points on the Glaize arm. My son and I had a blast and a couple times we had 3-4 fish on at once. We also caught largemouth, whites and cats.

Thanks for the posts. I have heard about the boat traffic on the lake, but hoped the Niangua branch would be quieter/safer. Good idea on the rock bass/sunfish bite. I had figured on crappie, but getting back to basics with bobber and corn will be a treat for all of us. In my day it was cane poles, but snoopy rods will work just fine. Thanks again for the help.
Boat traffic would be my main concern, the main lake can get very rough especially on the weekends. Early mornings are best, and you have the opportunity to see a beautiful sunrise over the hills. I have been taking my daughters (ages 6,11,13) fishing on LOZ quite a bit this year, due to Truman being so high. We have done very well pulling crank baits, and I've found that its extremely easy for kids, as there is no hook setting. I think you could pull cranks with minimal gear, and probably do well. Pulling cranks is simple, and we've had a lot of fun, and caught alot of really nice sized crappie. The other good thing about pulling cranks, is you can catch all species on them. The kids have a ball reeling in what ever fish is on the end of the line. Be safe and good luck

Find some good looking water 30 feet plus and troll crank baits. Even on a slow day something is gonna hit and let them reel it in....no casting, tangled lines, just easy fishing

Get out early and be done by 10 or you'll think you're fishing in the ocean when the boat traffic starts. Fourth of July is the busiest holiday for pleasure boaters and with most people making it a 4 day weekend this year it will be nuts.
