    Default Smithville letting water out.

Why are they still dumping water at Smithville when it is already low and the Crappie are staging?

They are going to draw it down to 2 feet below normal pool. Their reasoning is to create increased capacity for spring rains. It has really slowed the fishing down for crappie and bass.

Same thing they do every year. They had it at their planned level early this year but the big rains took it right back up. Supposed to be done on the 20th if there isn't further rain.

I hate it also, but they're expecting rain and don't want it to overflow. It's good for killing off zebra mussel also..

They do it every year - It's a foot low now and 1 more to go.

Surface temp is in the low 50's so doubt any crappie are getting ready to spawn.

Never fails, when the dam goes wide open the bite drops off. Haven't been up on the main lake yet this year, but have been catching a few whites up on the river, probably give it a shot Tues. before the storms come in. Last time out was skunk, but could have had fun with a bow carp flopping everywhere in the flooded grass.

its been a tough bite so far this spring , but should be picking up once the water level stabilizes and temp comes up a little more .

They're trying to get down so when the spawn occurs, they won't have to let water out. It's now almost 2' down and they've stopped releasing water. When Smithville lake gets 4' high, the Corps has to release water regardless of the stage of the spawn. Having an additional 2' of storage reduces the number of times they have to release water during the actual spawn. During the spawn they will try to match the inflow as best they can to keep the lake stable to slightly rising but a huge rain event can overwhelm their ability. The Corps has been great working with us to try and maximize favorable water levels for the spawn.
