    Default Shorts at Sardis

I was able to fish Sardis this weekend. I haven't been since April due to building all Summer. We probably boated 30 fish by 10:30 Saturday morning, all between 10 and eleven inches, trolling. Only one keeper! I caught fish anywhere between 10 and 22 ft. of water looking for a better bite. I spoke with a couple of guys at the ramp saying the same. Is this just something that happens every now and again or have any of you had similar experiences lately?

This happens when the water level is fishable in the Spring. So much pressure before during spawn takes an enormous number of keepers out of lake and we usually see about 10 to 1 shorts to keepers ratio all summer and fall. Water level was very high in Springs of 2018, 2019 and 2020 and fishing pressure was reasonably light before and during those spawns. We caught good keeper ratios during summer and fall of those three years. This is just my opinion and I'm sure some would disagree with me. I've fished Sardis hard since I retired in 2008 and I've seen this happen consistently during these last 13 years.

Well on the North end of Ross Barnett shorts were the only fish biting for me. I just came back from 5 days on the Rez, it looks like IDA moved quite a bit of the structure around disturbing the big Blacks. I didn't catch a single big black in 5 days in sunk trees.

I fish Sardis a lot and was actually up there this past Sunday. We probably caught 40 or so fish and had a total of 5 keepers.

While we were out there, we spoke with a state biologist that was conducting surveys and he stated the same thing mentioned above. The water levels in the spring of this year allowed much more fishing pressure than years past, which allowed a LOT more of the keeper fish to be caught. He stated that with the growth rate on the lake, the 11.5" - 11.75" fish will grow to keeper size within the next few months.
