    Default Hot rod.

I went fishing at Grenada today. I went up the Scuna side close to Turkey Creek. A thunderstorm formed north of there around 11:30 and I ran south to get away and watch the clouds. The storm moved on and I wanted to fish some more . When I picked up my Denali rods I got several static electricity shocks. Did this have anything to do with the thunderstorm? I dropped the rods and got the heck out of there and off the lake. Has this happened to anyone else?

Had a friend come in under the same circumstances last year with a story just like yours. I have never experienced it but I believe it happened to him. Said the rods
tingled when he picked them up.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

When you are holding a graphite rod in a thunderstorm, you are holding a lightening rod.
The static electricity excites the molecules in the graphite, they will hum before they discharge.
Back in my bass days, the fish were really biting good right before a big thunderstorm was rolling down the lake, and I just could not leave. Like a 3 -4 lb fish on every cast good.
Until the rod starting humming and vibrating, and the Trileme XL 14 lb test line floated in the air...then I hauled boogie in my aluminum boat back to the ramp.
Got the boat on the trailer and out of the water right as the thunderstorm hit. Rained so hard couldn't see to drive through the parking lot.

When they are that much static in the air you definitely don’t need to stay on the water and you absolutely don’t want to be holding a rod! Wise choice dropping the rods and high tailing!

I got a dose of that on a lake in NW Arkansas as a storm passed. It didn't take me long to feel of that rod. I know 3 more that it has happened to.

Happened to me on Neely Henry Lake in Alabama about 3 years ago. About same circumstances as you described. Was not directly under a storm.
