I never use minnows when Pushing jigs. (but that's just me )

Jigs and bait scent like Slab Sauce or crappie nibbles.

I like Satdoc’s sickle runner with a curly tail soaked in Slab Sauce.

When water temps start to warm up and fish get more aggressive you can usually leave the minnows at the baitshop. I don't really pull jigs and am not crazy about crankbaits. I do pull cranks to stock the freezer though, just seems an easy way to go about it, but I get no thrill from just reeling them in anymore. Plus like being to sit under and umbrella in the dog days of summer. Hard to do when pushing off the front of the boat, the brella gets in the way.

I will push roadrunners (power troll) and have minnows with me. Partly to see what they prefer that day and otherwise to make for a larger presentation to attract the bigger fish. It's all trial and error, never hurts to have a few dozen minnows this time of year while they can still be kept alive easily, cheap insurance in my mind. If you don't need them great, but if you ain't got them and on the water it's a bummer!

I push em tipped with a minnow! Usually a 2 or 3 inch curl tail of some sort! The Bobby garland stroller is one of my favorites! Going to try pulling some this year though but my favorite is power trolling! Get a heavier weight and push them road runners .8-1.2 and cover some water!

The Blue Moon was particularly effective last year.

I have been experimenting a lot with pulling jigs / crankbaits the last year or so with mixed success. Here's what's worked for me:

For jig pulling, I prefer a 1/16 oz BPS Crappie Maxx Pro Minnow Jig head in black or red. Some I will troll with just a minnow, others I like to tip with either a black/chartreuse, blue/chartreuse, or silver jig body with some good tail action (I like the Bobby Garland Stroll'rs). For this size jig head, trolling at 0.8-1 mph seems to be the sweet spot (6-8 ft depth).

For pulling cranks, I really like the Arkie 220 series crappie cranks, with the Sexee Shad, Chrome, and White colors being top producers in my area (7-8.5 ft depth). These I fish with an 14"-18" section of mono / fluorocarbon tied with a uni knot to my medium action rods (they have braid) and put a small snap swivel on the end, to allow for quick change out. I troll these at 1.5-1.8 mph.

Minnows seem to produce the best bite when the water is cooler, while late spring / summer the fish can hammer the crankbaits some days. I've found that chrome in particular tends to attract a lot of bites from channel cats and small blues in my home lake. Put a variety of colors out in the beginning and see what the fish are biting on. I fish 2-4 rods at a time in my canoe / kayak and will average 3-6 fish in a hour when the bite is good. I found that when I troll faster (2-2.5 mph), I get more bites from white perch / white bass, too.

Right now is the time to either single pole or spider rig,, jigs tipped with minnows or crappie nibbles are best....it’s spawning time
