If walking trails are open(according to his executive order) which most aren’t 6’ wide the lakes should be as well.

Here’s a copy of the email I sent, feel free to copy and paste and send to Governor Reeves. Don’t forget to add your name at the end.

    Governor Reeves,
As an avid outdoorsman I ask you to reconsider the closure of lakes and rivers in your executive order. While walking trails are left open in which most trails are not wide enough for people to pass each other without coming within 6 feet of each other, the lakes and rivers allow people unlimited distance between each other. During this time families are able to spend time together and fishing is a large part of many Mississippi residents pass time. As long as social distancing is maintained and no large groups gather the lakes and rivers should remain open in my humble opinion. I’ve fished many times in the last two weeks without observing large groups of people gathering, it seems as if the general public, especially outdoorsmen, observe the 6 feet guidelines set forth by the CDC. In closing, once again, I ask you to reconsider the closing of the lakes and rivers.
    Sincerely,

I am from Ohio and I read the MS thread often. I read on an NC thread where Lake Jordan (where I fished when I was stationed at Fort Bragg) ramps were overrun this past weekend and the NCDNR was turning people around. If I remember correctly they closed some if not all lakes in NC. It wasn’t people fishing that were the problem. It was the boaters tied to one another and party boats packed with people.

I agree with MatthewJ and applaud his efforts but I can also see both sides of the argument. A lot of people just don’t care and think infection isn’t going to happen to them. Unfortunately bad apples spoil the barrel and because of this a “one size fits all” decision was made for the health and safety of everyone.

Maybe to governor would consider only allowing boats that restrict max number of persons to 2 on y’alls lakes and rivers. I am pretty certain Ohio is headed in the same direction as Mississippi but as of this morning the lakes and rivers are open.

    Stay safe AND healthy.

As a doc in Tupelo I urge all the folks on the MS forum to follow the stay at home order. I totally understand everyone's frustrations about not being able to fish but you have to understand what we are dealing with. This is something none of us have ever seen. The speed at which this spreads and kills is something we haven't seen and is scary to behold. Trust me on that. It's not just "hanging out at the ramps" that we worry about, its the car ride to the lake, stopping for gas, etc. that goes with fishing. It's the example it sets for others that see you towing a boat to the lake at the time of stay at home order and how that will temp others to disobey this as well. The big four bring people from surrounding states as well which in a time of pandemic is something that needs to be limited as well. The last thing we need at this point it for people from all over crossing state lines from other areas possibly bringing in more chance for infection. This will kill a lot of folks before this is over, many who may frequent this site. If you don't want to obey these orders for your own health, then at least do it for others. The loss of our older generation simply isn't worth catching a crappie at this point. The fishing will be here next spring. Many of our/my friends will not be depending on how this works out and the mature decisions people make or don't. Not trying to preach or start a fight with anyone. I'm heading to work soon where I now have to wear a mask all day to try and pray to not get infected today and bring it back to my wife and little girls. The general public doesn't have to take that risk nor should they. I just ask that everyone do their part and obey any rules set out by the state for the good of everyone, even if it does shut down our favorite past time for a short while.

Email sent, I encourage others to do the same.

All Lakes, Rivers, & Reservoirs Closed?

    Good Morning,

I just watched the video of the shelter in place order and noticed it included the closure of public fishing access statewide. But not walking trails, how does that make any sense?

So I can get out and got to my job and work on a constructions site with a 50 to 200 men and women every day.

I can go thru the drive thru at any fast food place and order food that possibly may be contaminated. Even if the cooking process may kill the virus or the stomach would, the handling of bags, wrappers, drink, utensils etc. pose a risk if you wipe your eyes or nose afterwards.

I can go huddle up in gas stations, grocery stores, dollar stores, laundromats with a bunch of possible coronavirus carriers.

Your telling me the public can't go out to a 20,000 to 30,000 acre and launch a boat or fish off a bank 100's of yards or further away from any others?

I do understand the severity of the issue, but I think your "health experts" approach may be flawed here. Seems more like punishment then protection taking away fishing from everyone this spring.

    Thank you,
    Put my name here.

Wrote in haste before I have to go to work, but it's a start. Hope the governors inbox gets flooded with emails from fishermen. I would hope they try to remain cordial and polite!

I respect that your a Md and have to play that role. The citizens are fully aware of that situation at hand and fully understand the risk/consequences and capable of making rational decisions on our own. The people that are that scared of the virus do not need a shelter in place order to stay home. They can do that on their own free will. However our constitutional rights should not be restricted.
