    Default Lake Gernada late march

Hey guys, some buddies and I are heading down to Gernada March 25th. From Iowa. We have had this trip planned for a year. I know the water is gonna be high and most likely tough to fish. Any thoughts on what I can expect? What to pre-pare for? Any other lakes with in a couple hours that would be better? We are not expecting to catch a limit. We are from Iowa where crappie normal are 8-12. We do catch some bigger, but not alot. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You got Enid And Sardis just up the road. Usually that time of year fish will be biting on one of them. Plus if windy you can usually get on one of them with as many boat ramps that will be accessible to get out of the wind. No one today can tell you what it will be like in 25 days. Up here in NW corner we are supposed to be getting rain starting tonight and next couple of days. I’m about 80 miles north of Grenada and most of our heavier ran this spring so far has been south of me in that area and further south. Plus I’d expect to see more as it warms in next couple of weeks. Best thing is come on down and then ask or at least a couple of days before you leave. Someone will help you to get started.

What I tell everyone who is new to the lakes is be versatile and flexible and prepared to put some miles on the truck. We have had years where we start at Grenada, drive to Washington and then back up to Sardis in the same day. Never know what is gonna happen.

Great advice from Mo Bushwhacker! We got slammed with a big rain again last night. One of the Big 4 or Lake Washington will probably be best choice that week but who knows at this stage.

I’m from Missouri and this is my 7th year going that time of the year. My advise is same as others, check right before you get there. I spider rig the open water around the flooded timber but some people fish closer to the banks and trees for the males making nests. I have traveled to the other lakes when it gets tough but mostly stay at Grenada and it seems we always find a few big ones. I’m no expert or guide but pm me before you go and I’ll try to steer you right.

    Hey Robb,
Your trip sounds about the same as my group, just a few days after you. Our group of 3 boats will be going down there from Illinois, just on the 28th. We have found a ton of advice looking through prior year threads around the same time of year and also on YouTube.
A lot may/will happen in the next few weeks...let’s hope it stops raining and stabilizes at least a little!

What he said... thinking for ones self or finding fish on their own is highly overrated. Most folks I know down here loved to be stalked and crowded in on. It makes for good times, why should them locals have any peace and enjoyment this time of year? Lake Gernada late march

Best bet is to watch where they are heading and cut in front of them. They don't mind and besides it makes them feel good to know that you think they know what they are doing.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
