    Default Distance back ?

Prolly right in front of me, but, when you see on charts the distance back and speed= depth of lure, where does the distance back start from on the fishermans end ? Rodtip, reel, back of boat, surface of water....... ?

Where the line meets the water. The line between the rod tip and the water doesn’t count.

Best bet is let your lure back till it starts to swim then reset your line counter.

Technically, if you put the rod back into the same holder and let out the amount of line you just caught a crappie on, you're still good.

Best advise I’ve seen on this subject. Makes perfect since. Eliminates the guessing of the line out of the water to a tee.

It's easier just to count from the rod tip and forget all that other stuff

Take MR DUX advice, that's how I do it also.

If you do not change holders eventually you will get a target depth ., Makes no difference what your reels say if you can recreate . One side 50,60 70 80 . other 75,85, 95,105 . fish on . Very rare that people have same amount of line on reels anyways . Going to be a difference to some degree .

I use line counters on my rods but I've gone with others who just cast them out and go and we still caught fish. Its harder to repeat what works without the line counters though. Sometimes if we went for a while without catching anything I'd flip the bail and let a little more line out on one or two rods but it would be almost impossible to know exactly how much was out to begin with, how much more I let out by flipping the bail and letting line run out for a few seconds, etc...

I have more confidence when using my line counters but I wouldn't let the lack of line counters stop me from going and trying to catch a few.
