    Default Sardis help.

We are headed to Sardis this weekend for a youth sporting clays, skeet, and trap combine. We'r staying in the cabins at Sardis. Shooting will be over Saturday and we will fish Saturday evening and Sunday. We're not taking a boat so I am looking for areas to bank fish. Don't care what species. We fish for stripes, crappie, cats, bluegill, creek chubs, red bellies, and even large mouth if nothing worthy will bite, lol. We fish the spillway at the rez often so we have gear for that if the spillway there is in play. Also have wade gear and fly rods for small creek fishing. Not looking for fish to keep just catch. Have long rods for distance if needed.

Thanks for any help. I know nothing about Sardis so any info is appreciated.

Not a lot of help. If all else fails, go to the spillway.

There is about 4500 cfps going thru gates into spillway now. Should be running a lot of water thru the weekend unless Sardis gets a big rain (2" or more) between now and then.

I have fished several tail races with lots of success. I can read water and can locate fish very well in moving water no matter how fast or slow. What do folks normally fish for? Are there stripes there? Crappie and cats are easy in moving water. What's the bottom like? Smooth or rocks? Just looking for what gear to take. I'm not looking for honey holes. Just places with good access. Are there rules specific to the spillway there?

I don't fish the spillway so can't provide any information from experience. Here is the spillway report from this week's Sardis report on MDWFP website:

The spillway had two gates open 8.0 ft each (4750 cfs) Tuesday. Fishing in the rip-rapped part of the spillway has slowed down. For crappie, fish jigs and/or minnows out of the current or right along the rocks. Folks have also been catching crappie spider rigging in the Lower Lake. For catfish, fish natural baits near the bottom. Fish for White Bass with jigs or small crankbaits (watch the rocks!) in the current. For largemouths, cover in the old river run is the best bet, or fish right on the rocks in the spillway with crankbaits or a jig-n-pig.

Had a ball at the spillway today. I had 4 of my kids with me. I would guess we were north of 100 fish! Caught white bass, cats, sucker, buffalo, green sunfish, gar, and one eel about 30" long. We had a great time! Thanks guys for the info.

Ended up finishing Sardis spillway Sat evening and Sunday morning with the results being a really nice mess of crappie.

Fished Enid spillway mid morning Sunday with limited success. Water was high with little to no current breaks. Caught gar and skipjacks.

Finished Granada spillway Sun afternoon. WOW! four of us fishing for 3 hours with constant action of white bass. Three time during the day all four of our rounds were bent at the same time with fish.

Thank you so much to those that contributed info. You made it a success!

All the fish species we caught were on the following...

Hand tied crappie jigs (1/16 over a 1/24) doubled rigged and casted in the film.

Inline spinners built on a 3/16 worm weight with a #3 French blade also run in the film.

Small, cheap (i think they were $2) crank baits from Walmart.

All the white bass were in the film (just below the surface) to about 4 feet deep. We were running them pretty fast. Most people around us were fishing too deep and to slow and only catching a few. Everytime we left a spot people would flock to the spots we were leaving. They thought it was the place we were standing. They never paid attention to what we were doing nor did they ask. I watched a couple of guys for a while that took "our" spot as we packed up at Granada. I don't think they caught a fish, while I was watching anyway. Name: 20190510_223156.jpg
