The part of the river I fish has an old river run with little to no current and several lakes off of the main river. The lakes are mostly shallow. I single pole in the lakes in the spring and as the water warms up, I single pole brush tops in the old river run. I usually catch some nice fish but not a lot of numbers

Fishing on the waterway is a little different than other places. The COE controls the flow of water via the lock and dam systems. The current, or lack of, can dictate how and where the baitfish and crappie are located. It's pretty common to locate schools of fish that simply will not bite until the current picks up and triggers a bite. The same thing can happen on a smaller scale when a barge passes by and reverses the natural flow of things. You must understand that this river is fairly narrow but has heavy commercial traffic. I've often been fishing an area with nothing happening when a barge would pass by and trigger bites. It's hard to understand and believe until you witness it happen.

The areas I fish sound about the same. I generally spider rig the old river runs and the deepest old lakes I can find this time of year. The fish I target in the old runs are relating more to ledges than structure. Some of the deeper side lakes may hold fish all year long if they are 10-15 ft deep. It can amaze you just how shallow these crazy fish will get when it’s still cold.

I fish the Columbus Pool for the most part, Hy 50 is about haft way between Columbus and Aberdeen. If the COR is holding at Columbus but turning it loose at Aberdeen the bite will be on from 50 north to Aberdeen. If they start turning it loose at Columbus the bite will shut down north of 50.

I know that is right, it's enough to drive a fella crazy running around trying to figure it all out. When there is no current is when I start looking in the old lakes
