    Default New Drift Socks

I got in on the cabelas sale price on the drift socks.. never used them before as i have a really good chain.
Do i need the floats that were suggested as a companion item. Never been in a boat that used them
Is there anything else needed other than the ropes

    Thanks in advance

Make you up a lead rope and slide it through a 1 ft piece of pool noodle. Slide it down to where rope attaches to drift sock and wrap it real tight with electrical tape. Whole lot cheaper than them strap with float.

I have used them some, and I don't use the floats. They work well without them.

Buy the harnesses with the floats.

It seems to me that the entire drift sock would sink when the boat is stopped if you don’t have the float to hold it up. Sinking in my home lake (Reelfoot) could be another hang up.

The only time I have used them spider rigging I ran into this, ended up just leaving because of the hangups. I use a small one when longlining in extreme wind and have a noodle on it like Cray described, works good. Longlining in 20 mph winds is pretty interesting.

I’ve been using 2 of the big drift socks anytime the wind is blowing much for a few years now. I bought the harness BRM mentioned with the floats. I recently replaced one float with a piece of a pool noodle and it works just as well.

If your fishing snags your gonna catch one with the drift sock with a float or without a float. The socks I bought came with floats on a harness and I used them until they were done. Since then I just use good old fashioned rope and a carabiner. I can’t tell the difference and I’m pretty picky about boat control. I also run paddles but the socks still come out on occasions. Probably the most beneficial thing about the float is if you got hung up in a bad wind and needed to cut the sock loose before you sank you would be able to retrieve it.

The drift socks I had before I got paddles had a float sewn in to the top of the drift sock and weight sewn in on the bottom of the sock. It would open faster when
deployed and would keep the sock from sinking if it came loose from the boat. The harness had a float close to the boat to keep it from getting into the prop if the
    wind let up.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

How do you like the paddles compared to the socks?
