Default General questions about Enid for Crankfest

Since I have only seen this lake from a couple of viewpoints last Crankfest and never fished it, I need some general idea where to start my quest. I have just got a HotMaps version of Enid, Sardis, and Grenada. I have zero idea if we will be able to fish any lake but Enid in the 3 days we will be there.

    1. Was the river dredged and channeled prior to flooding? I see markings all over this map that say old river channel that meander all over the place but appear to very a very small stream.

    2. The map shows standing timber from Water Valley Landing to Prophet Bridge. Since the lake was formed in 1952, I have to assume most of the timber is rotted off or fallen? Any still standing? How hazardous is this area to navigate? I remember running Lake Eufaula (AL /GA) in the early 80s and what was left of the timber there was like seeing telephone poles just under the surface.

    3. Anybody care to give a very general idea where one should drop the cranks? Typical summertime patterns and depth. Flats vs Contours? Not looking for waypoints.

Will many at Crankfest fish the other Big 3? Pole limits? Creel limits? Size limits (>12")? Availability of gas, license, groceries.

Thanks Guys. We are getting pumped about being there. If someone would like to answer any of these but prefer PM, I'm all for that also.

If there is any way any of the 4 of us can help (besides Jere's cobblers), feel free to ask.

One other thing, how safe and secure is the Cossar State Park area? Should we plan on stripping the boats nightly?

Unload the boat at pretty much any landing and put the poles out. The ramp there at the State Park is as good as any and it's a short ride to almost anywhere on the lake. From Water Valley landing back to the old river channel is very noticeable on your graph. There is a dredge that runs from the dam east to just above Point 5. Almost every big hollar has a good creek coming out of them and very distinct ledges and contours.

Have stayed at Cossar many times and have yet to have anything taken either from my tent or boat. We usually pull my boat up to the bank and leave the trolling rods in the rod holders and tie the boat up for the night.
On the other hand I had a tackle box full of crankbaits stolen off my boat at Grenada, parked 20 feet from my tent while I slept.

Thanks for all the PMs and phone calls. Got a general idea of some spots. Funny thing is I had marked my map with some spots I wanted to try. I now have marks over my marks.

Pull cranks in this area from about 12-15 to 20’ sit back and have fun. Hit the coves too. A lot of fish are schooled up in the coves if the wind gets up.

Cossar is about 8 miles from I-55 exit 227. 2 gas station west side of exit. Shell sells minnow.
walmart at Batesville exit 243, exit east. Another food store to your west at hwy 51.
walmart at Grenada exit 206, exit east, it will be on your right. Spain's on the square has great prices the first weekend of the month.
Water Valley, 16 miles east of I-55 has a good grocery store.
Charleston, 11 miles west of I-55 has a good grocery store.
walmart is a good place to buy licenses. Stop at the rest area below Hernando for a state map.

The timbers at Water Valley landing are mostly utility poles now. Some broke off at low water levels so watch your speed through them.
If you pull past point #9 be ready to get hung up unless in main channel.

Is the channel marked thru the timber from 9-11? Is it reliable?

Enid is a very easy lake, you will be okay. The only thing I can recommend to you is if you want a good steak dinner one night run up to Como Steakhouse in Como or go south to The Kennel Club in Grenada. Good luck, and have a safe trip down!
