Be sure surge protects both AC power and Signal coaxial cable.

Rees, you might try a battery backup/surge protector. There's no need for the more powerful ones if you're not using it to actually power the TV. I keep all my expensive electronics plugged into battery backups to allow me time to turn everything off and physically unplug them in the event of power spikes/drops. The ones I get are from walmart, and they have built-in surge protection, too. I don't believe they're strong enough to power the big TVs or even my desktops for long, but like I said, I only use them to prevent improper shutdowns and fluctuations in power. If you're not at home when the power goes out, you still get the surge protection and prevention against immediate power loss for as long as the battery lasts.

Most of your Rural Electric systems aren't grounded very well.. might need to add one or 2 ground rods at the house..

    John,

if what BigBlue said the Rural Electric systems aren't grounded very well ,you can have the best surge protector made and it won't work worth a flip if you ain't got a good electrical ground !!!

Check and see if your satellite dish is grounded. Wherever it’s mounted it sould have a ground wire coming directly from the dish itself and going to a ground rod.
