    Default My boat stinks!!!

Just cleaned the boat up from our annual week of fishing in Minnesota at Chapel Hill lodge and thought I would throw out a post.
First, you sure can get a boat filthy and smelly in a week fishing and catching!!!
Last Friday Spartannation and I met up with the rest of the group and caravaned up to Sand lake in Itasca county. Thru the course of the week we caught enough fish to have a daily fish diner and bring a few home to share with family and friends.

Our main target species were perch. Although we found some daily they were harder to find then in years past. Usually we would use perch rigs in the thicker weeded flats with minnows and crawlers. Although we caught a few that way, we could not get a consistent bite that and the fish we did find were smaller.

I believe we had a much warmer and milder weather pattern then years past and probably had the fish still scattered.
Soooo, Jerry and I switched up and started with a jig/minnow under a slip bobber/float on the less weedy flats with immediate access to deeper water. We didn't light em up this way but regularly caught better quality perch and thru the course of each day were able to bring a nice mess.

The thing with slip fishing you also catch non-targeted species and we caught quit a few. We boated walleye (unfortunately this lake has a pretty wide slot 18-26 inches) and we only were able to keep one the entire week that came in at 17.5 as most were around the 22 mark. Along with walleye we caught bullhead, rock bass, small mouth bass and small pike

We also spent the first hour of our day chasing gills. This lake has special regs for them and you can only take five a day. But, they are really nice and a blast to catch!

It was a great vacation and we got a healthy dose of good food, good company and good fishing. The weather was beautiful the entire week, sometimes too beautiful. On the flat calm days the fish did not want to bite. Sand Lake is a great fishery and we caught quite a variety of fish. One of the days I caught gills, sunfish, rock bass, perch, pike, walleye, small mouth bass and bullheads. Can't wait until next years trip.
