Wayne, saw this after I shot you back a pm. Couple other folks on here should have info/thoughts for you too. Have fun up there!
Hello every one, I am going to visit a friend near Houghton lake next weekend and he is talking about fishing on houghton lake if the weather permits, he is a walleye fisherman, wondering if you have any suggestion on fishing for crappies on Houghton this time of year, what tackle to use , what part of the lake. Thanks for any suggestion you may have. I am a newbie to Crappie fishing so ANY INFO would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Fishing is only an addiction if your trying to quit.

I would start by trolling jigs and plastics along the weed edge out from McKinnley canal towards the blue marina building. If that doesn't work try the south side of East Bay, same tactic, troll jigs along the weed edges. I've heard about good crappie on the north east corner in the Flint Road/ Markey Road area but haven't fished that area myself, could be it's just a rumor.
Old fishermen don't die, they just smell that way.

Berkley rods. Outfishing customs 2-1 since 2018
There are several weed beds mid lake that feature sharp drops (for Houghton Lake, anyway). You can see the contours on a lake map. Find those edges, and look for the cabbage growing up to the surface. This is a spring technique, don't know how well it will work in the fall.
Thanks for all of the great info. I will let you know how it goes, friend we are visiting has covid so looks like a no go this week end. but all of the info will be used sometime in the near future.
Thanks so much.
