Default Crappie fishing with a Mohawk

No, not the haircut. I went back to my honey hole today and decided to try and go old school. I was hoping to catch a crappie on one of my old rod/reel combos. This one is a Mohawk steel telescoping rod, probably 40's vintage, and a Bach-Brown spinning reel. I had to tape the reel in place to make sure it didn't fall off. I was rigged with 6lb stren and a 1/16 jig/baby shad under a set bobber. Today I took knee high boots to keep my feet dry. That didn't work so well, my boots had holes in them.

First cast I got a solid hit and was able to land a nice 11" crappie. Mission accomplished! Second cast was another hit, what felt like a better fish that took me into the weeds and got off. That was it for crappie bites. Luckily I had brought along a container of wax worms so I switched over to a #10 hook/wax worm under a bobber and started catching decent bluegills.

The old steel rod was fun to fish with but didn't have enough backbone to keep the gills out of the weeds and brush so I switched over to a modern set up and finished up my 25 fish limit. Most were 7 1/2 and over. I have a few more old combos I want to try. Some of them belonged to my grandpa and haven't caught a fish in probably 50 years so it will be cool to get them back on the water.Name: 10137.jpg

I fished an old steel rod, that belonged to my dad, when I was 10-12 years old.
You are fortunate, to still have it. Good job.
