Higgins is a deep, clear lake with mostly cold water species. Several trout species, smelt, perch and rock bass are the main draws. Houghton Lake is a shallow lake with a good crappie population, if you can find them. Large mouth, small mouth, pike, walleye and bluegill are there as well. Lots of lakes close by with good fishing. St Helen and Missaukee are close and can be real good at times. As far as having a get away in the area, depends on the area. If you have good neighbors who will watch your place while you're gone you should have no problems. If not, you may have problems. Some of the locals have a problem with down staters but most don't. I wouldn't be afraid to meet the neighbors before I bought. Here's some Houghton fish caught a couple of Junes ago.
