Default Look what followed me home

Jeff says I should have titled it "Oops, I did it again".

I had a lot of fun fixing up my Sylvan two years ago and really enjoyed taking the "Grey Beard" from a project boat to a real nice fishing boat this year. I've been looking for another project boat for this coming winter, one that I can fix and flip. Today Jeff and I took a drive to Sullivan, Indiana, 20 miles south of Terra Haute, to look at a boat I found on Craig's List.

It is a 1998 Sylvan 1600 Explorer, the same as my other boat, with a 50hp Johnson 2 stroke. It has a very nice, solid trailer, new Helix 5, new oil injection system, newly rebuilt tilt/trim, a couple of anchors, 3 new seats. The bad is the motor cover is sun baked to the point that there is no paint left, the floor is bad and the livewell plumbing needs re doing. We took it out on Sullivan Lake and the boat is very dry and the motor runs great.

16 1/2 hours after we left, we pulled in at home with my new project in tow. No issues on the way home, thankfully. Now we need winter to set in so I can get to work. Here's a few pictures of the new addition to the "Grey Beard" fleet.Name: IMG_20190925_192521400.jpg

Looks like it's ready to go fishing, let me know if you want to sell it in spring.

You could fish out of it as is.

I went out this morning and tore out the carpet. There was three layers of plywood in places and three layers of carpet, too. The only rotted plywood is the 18"x36" piece that covers the tunnel where the built in gas tank is. Other than that the plywood is in good shape, just needs to be dried out. This won't be as bad as I was thinking.

Let me know, I would like something like that for bigger lakes in Michigan, like harty pond or holton lake.

This time of year their is a lot of projects out there, maybe I'll run across something. I was also thinking maybe a project 16 foot or something that size and throw the 35 hp force on it,we just don't use the pontoon much, and speed is not a priority.

The problem is that people think their project boats are worth a fortune. I have been looking since spring and been watching this one for a month or so.

I tore into it good today. I went further backwards then I did with the other Sylvan. The storage locker/ live well on the port side are out and the rod locker on the star board side is out. I pulled one piece of plywood from the floor to check the flotation foam and was pleased that the foam is dry. I took the bilge pump apart and cleaned the nasty out of it and got it working again. I'll pull the front deck later today or tomorrow. Once everything is removed I'm going to let it set for a while to make sure everything is good and dry before I reassemble it. I think I'll drop it in the water and check for leaks as long as everything is open.

Forgot to mention how the carpet was fastened down. One of the previous owners used small screws in stead of staples. Most of them were rusted and had to be pulled out. Never seen anything like it.

Always wondered why someone would trash a nice boat like that, I'm sure you will bring it back to life.
