Default Afternoon salmon trip on the Grand

Jeff and I hit the Grand River today hoping to find a salmon or two. We launched above Weber Dam and motored upstream to the Portland Dam. With Jeff's boat we are able to get right up to the dam. We did see a few salmon trying to jump the dam but got none to hit our spinners.

The good thing about fishing below the dam, there are plenty of other species of fish there. We rigged up with a jig and baby shad under a set bobber and were able to land 5 different species, largemouth, smallmouth, rock bass, pike and channel catfish. The cats came on nightcrawlers.

On the way back to the launch we stopped at the David Hwy bridge and caught a few rock bass and one 9" crappie. Name: IMG_20190909_152306961_HDR.jpg

Jeffs the cool one. I still have to work. We're 10 minutes from the launch and a 20 minute boat ride up to Portland Dam so an afternoon trip is easy to pull off.

Don, I get a little giddy when we land a northern. In my opinion, they're better eating than walleye, once you learn how to get rid of the Y bones.

I do not think they are in large numbers yet, but give it another week or two, and it should have larger numbers of Salmon.

Side note, I don't know if Coho, go that far up the river, but two weeks ago, there was a HUGE push of Coho going into Grand Haven (Leading into Grand River)
Enough so that a boat went 17/20 on Coho.

Erin, coho get up to Lansing. The ones we saw on the apron of the dam were coho. I agree, there aren't many up this far yet. We knew that going in but it was a good excuse to hit the river. The last few years have stunk but about 4 years ago we got 12.

If I'm going to eat salmon, I prefer coho. But only if I cannot get Pacific kings! The coho have soft mouths compared to kings and at times you lose more than you catch.
