Default Tuesday afternoon Grand River bluegills

Jeff and I hit the back waters of the Portland dam yesterday afternoon looking for enough bluegill for my dinner. The water was up slightly and the current a bit stronger than usual so we looked for eddies and areas close to the bank with current breaks. Most people don't think about the river as a bluegill fishery and that is to our advantage. We rarely see any one else else when we fish there.

Jeff was using a small jig and baby shad type bait under a set bobber and I was using red worms and pieces of crawler on a #10 aberdeen under a slip bobber. When we found the right type of areas, the bite was fast and furious. We caught a ton of bluegills and sunfish from 3" to 8", both large mouth and small mouth bass, rock bass and one decent channel cat.

The last fish I landed was the catch of the day and I need to tell BillBob, there are some fish that, no matter how far out you hold them, still look small. I also caught a funky looking gill.Name: IMG_20190813_144340397_HDR.jpg

Yes it does, John. And it gets zero fishing pressure.

Spent a beautiful Saturday morning with Michelle on the Grand above Portland dam. I worked a jig under a float and true to form for the Grand, you never know what you will hook. Caught smallmouth, large mouth, catfish, gills and carp. All on an 8th oz jig with a baby shad....but no crappie....Name: IMG_20190817_123758404_HDR.jpg

Maybe target Carp, and you’ll catch Crappie?

I remember the day we caught 7 or 8 different kinds of fish. The river is always fun.

That tiny little fish, did it have quite the large mouth?
    Fantastic day of fishing.
