Default 4/27/19 Detroit River Walleye Trip w/ Steve & Possum.

I was going to post this in the Walleye Channel, but I realized it was more a long single post with no way to make new threads. So I opted to start a new thread here.

Saturday, I was either up late, or woke up early, because @ 2:45, I was making Peach Mango Green Tea, and then hooking up my boat.

I was scheduled to pick up Steve & Chris, his Son @ 3:30, at the Portland Park & Ride.

The first thing I learned is why Jerry nick named Chris, Possum. Possum has the ability to CLEAR out a truck Cab, and enforce the dreaded 4/70 AC @ 43 degrees. For those that remember cars without AC, that 4/70 is 4 Windows Down, and go 70 Mph.

We got to The Bait and Tackle Box, grabbed some Minnows, and then headed to Elizabeth Park. It was a dreaded weekend, and its a ZOO, or so most people think. To be truthful, a little bit of planning, and ITS NOT AS BAD as some people make it out to be. Even Steve can not say it was bad, it was a great day, and no issues, but we have more......

We were there, launched, without issue, or rush, nary a conversation with anyone. WE motored slowly into Trenton Channel, and put the boat in neutral. I relaxed, sat up front, and changed into my Striker Ice Predator suit. Steve was doing the same.

We motored to a location not far from where Kevin & I were a week or two ago, and got set up. After the first drift, there was exactly zero in the boat, the second drift resulted into a single Walleye. The third drift was exactly zero, then we never made another drift without catching at least 1 Walleye.

What we did notice, and something I pointed out to Steve was that, every one was using a weird drift. It was as if they were drifting, but the wind was blowing them across the river instead of drifting down the intended line.

What I was doing was setting enough speed in the trolling motor to keep us the same speed forward as the wind blowing us back.

Well we got to a spot near the end of our drift, and found a spot with a large weed bed of sorts and after that we picked up 3 quick fish. But no one was following US, they we all "Pack Fishing" Also, I have 2 nets, and I do not yell "Fish" for other to hear, and I was using my short net. See most people look for the net to fly. If they look over, no one really notice's a guy leaning over and quickly scans away, as the Net never moves.

After a bit of catching fish, and Steve wondering WTH I was doing, I showed him how I was using my live minnows. Now I know that there are those out there (Skillet007 & Rich) who love plastics. When I was out there with Kevin a week or two ago, we were pretty much split on the take, 50/50 Minnows vs Plastics (There was a netting incident costing a live minnow catch, I wont go into that story..........) So I caught my last Walleye on a Plastic that day.

Any way after that change for Steve, it was like a HIGH SPEED Train, of catching Walleye. I even switched over from my preferred Rod, to a 37 yard old Berkeley Cherry Wood that my Grand Father bought me, and used that for a bit. It was cool to use, and fun, but defiantly not my preferred rod...... That thing was bent right over, and you would have thought I had a Muskie. It has no backbone and setting the hook was an adventure. I don't even really know the last time I used that pole, but I have always had it with me on my boat and prior boats at all times. For no other reason than I fished with my Grand Father, and he passed away while I was in the Military and we never got to fish again. In hind sight, I should have had Steve get a picture of me using it.

Anyway, Steve went on a like a MAGA Rally, all loud and proud, and was quickly catching Walleye, and we ended the day with a Father & Son DOUBLE. Both Steve & Possum had Walleye, and both were caught.

In all it was a cool trip, and after making a video, and then putting most stuff away in the boat, etc, while still on the water.
and we were done by 9:15 and headed back.

We got back to the launch, took our time, and loaded up, and then got ready to leave. Well, I went to use the bathroom. When I got back to Steve, I had this Cheshire Cat grin on my face, and he asked, me if I felt better, and I told him this quick interaction that occurred on my way back to my truck.

While walking back I found out that WE were the 2nd or 3rd boat back for the day. There was a guy in a Mercury Hoodie, and and graphics all over his boat, etc, (One of those guys who irritate you) Well, he asked how we did, as he informed me of his results before I could answer his question, as he bragged a 2 man limit, and saw me alone. I told him WE had a 3 man in less time, and were already loaded and leaving the lot. He then asked what color. I advised him that we were using Blue Jig heads, and Purple Plastics...... & walked away.

Steve cracked up laughing...... as did Possum & I.

We even stopped @ Wilson Marine as we had so much extra time. I wanted to see if they had a 21 foot Raptor for me to look at, but they only had a 18.50. I did not like it.

Anyway, while driving, We were talking and texting Ready2Fish, who was on Lake Erie. He was going to drop off his fish at my place. Which was cool, and thanked him, as I was catching fish for a trip back to Florida in a week or two, so thanked him. His only request was to measure his big fish, as it was near 26 or maybe 28 inches...............

Now to be truthful, I think he was on AUTO PILOT, as well as myself. I got home moved the cooler, decided I needed a new cordless fillet knife to clean all the fish, and went a bought a new Bubba Cordless. The short term results are good, I will know more long term at a later time.

I grab that walleye, and lay it out, and measure, and then started calling Jimmy. OVER and OVER and OVER until he answered, and he says (What, I was almost out for a NAP) It's was a dang MASTER ANGLER WALLEYE, get your Ash back over here. Had to get some pictures, measurements for him, etc, and the form is up to him. Kind of jealous, as that MA Patch this year is a Walleye. what a cool thing. I would post a picture of Jimmy's Walleye, but that is his beast to tell a story about...........

Yes those who are concerned about Gingers, I did indeed get a slight sun burn, for the limited time I was on the water. Yup, I wrote it, let the Ginger jokes flow..........

Anyway, Steve made a video of the day on his YouTube Channel, it can be seen here, and here are some pictures of the day as well. By the way, that is Possum, and his VERY FIRST WALLEYE!

Great minnow hooking tutorial Aaron. I have never done it exactly like that but I am going to start. If I ever buy minnows.

    Rich,

I just started hooking them like that last year, it works. That video I use a longer stinger hook, but that was for video purpose, but a shorter lead on the stinger works.
We wanted people to be able to see, and understand.

The story with that hook set up starts about 3 or 4 years ago. A group of people that is used to fish with (Who were down there Saturday actually) they used plastics, but would still get minnows. What they did was mount the plastics, add a minnow through the lips, on top of the plastics to make it look more enticing, Stinger hook was optional, and if added the stinger hook was free floating.

Minus the stinger hook, I was getting that live minnow snatched, I would get a hit, then nothing. I would reel up, and the minnow would be gone, plastic still there looking cool, but no dang Walleye. I would then add the stinger, and 1/2 the time, I would reel up, and the minnow would be gone, and 1/2 the time they would have the stinger.

I fished alone like that for the following year, same results, same frustration, then a year later (Last year), I was down there for a weekend, stayed @ Sterling SP, and was doing the same thing, the same results. I was by myself, but I had an advantage, no one to tell me i was an idiot for doing its a different way AND more importantly, I was comfortable, as I was NOT, on a "Power Fishing Boat" where the occupants thought that when you hooked a walleye, it was 5 ounces of pure gold, worth 2K, and scream FISH, and expect everyone else to reel up, and all others grab a net.

Frustrated with the minnow snatching, I took off the plastics, and mounted the minnow but went straight down the body and through the back, just like plastics. it was effective, but the minnow would die quickly. I would get a hit, and I would either catch a fish, or the minnow would be gone. I then added the stinger, free floating, and catch rates increased, but every so often, the minnow would be gone. I thought HOW THE HECK DOES THAT HAPPEN? So I added the stinger to the back of the minnow, between the tail and dorsal fin, and if I get a hit, its pretty sure a hit w/ a fish, and no miss.

As for the great Plastic vs Minnow debate, I can not really say, as I have caught Walleye on BOTH, Kevin & I were split almost 50/50 when we went, but I think, and this is from Salmon fishing, that live minnows have an advantage, and that is natural smell. No lotion on them, no sauce, etc. & I think this would work great in muddy water. The con is that there is not much of a profile that is where the plastic shine, as you can mess with the bait profile, size, width, etc.

But that video is my GO TO method for Walleye.
