Thread: New project-like I need more to do

Grumman always mad good boats back then. I've often thought of another boat project but have no place to put it. Probably no time to work on it.

Thursday I picked up oil for the tractor, 70 bags of concrete, and a mixer. Of course, the rental place appears to not check their stuff so it had 1 1/2 cubic feet of hard concrete in the tub and on the paddles. The recoil had hard concrete and it wouldn't retract, and it appears to not have been greased ever. It was their biggest unit and I needed it so I made a deal to clean it to get it for free.

Brian cleaned the motor, I air hammered concrete for 2 hours and got it all cleaned and greased. Friday we poured 70 bags (35 cuFt) in 1.5 hours. We took the thing back, they never even looked at it. To top it off, the owner says "thanks, half price on the rental" then drives away. Both of us were so angry. I felt like keeping it the rest of the day, removing the fuel, filling it back up with concrete, and bringing it back. Note, get a deal in writing!

Planted 32 norway spruce on Friday.
Today, I changed 2 gallons of engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, 7 quarts of 80/90 front axle gear oil, 10 gallons of hydraulic oil, and output and suction filter. 530.00 opec will be happy to collect from me. You take care of it and it will last. No idea what it would have cost to have it done!

I agree that it appears that that Grumman has the bare bones to make a solid and very dependable boat for many years of fishing fun.
Will be looking forward to the makeover thread and the ongoing progress to finished product.

The boat has a newly rebuilt transom, also.

Today I started removing the floor to get at the live well hoses. I'm going to put it in the water and check for leaks (rivets and hoses) before I put it back together. If I can, I'm going to put a piece of pvc pipe under the floor to fish wires through. Checked the bilge pump and live well pump and both work. The steering was very tight and I got that fixed. I'm going to solder and shrink tube all the electrical connections and I need to replace a couple of switches.

Any input on plywood for the floor. Marine grade is 77.00 a sheet but needs to be sealed to make it water resistant. ACX is 30.00 a sheet and could also be sealed. Both have exterior glue, marine grade is 7 ply and ACX is 5 ply. It won't set outdoors so I'm leaning towards ACX or even BCX.

Came with a roll of carpet so I'll go that route.

Have you thought about using aluminum? Nice boat find, I have been looking for a project like that, but haven't had any luck, always find fiberglass rotted stuff.
