    Default Get the anchor!

Michelle, Wilber and I are down on Pine Island doing a little fishing. We've caught some spotted sea trout and mackerel over the last couple days....today the weather man said to be ready for rain mid day. So we started out at day break and ran about 4 miles up the West side of the island to a spot we fished the day prior and did well...the wind was against us but we figured we only had a couple hours to fish before we would have to call it a day. We anchored up and caught a few trout. I was kicked back and throwing a spoon. I mentioned to Michelle I'd sure like a zinger like those mackerel do when they hit... Next cast and the drag started screaming..a huge tarpon came flying out of the water about 30 yards out.. The real kept screaming.... Michelle is grabbing her phone to get picks and the line continues screaming off the heaviest outfit I had... I'm starting to see the backing thru the remaining 20 lb fire line. I cranked up the motor and told Michelle.."get the anchor!!!!". She like a pro hoisted the anchor and jumped in the drivers seat..she started chasing it so I could put line on the real as I was near being totally spooled..now Michelle is not totally comfortable on a tiller steer but she was in back giggling trying to follow this monster..we had several boats around us..mind you some serious rigs worth more then I care to imagine...and here we are a couple northerners in a 14' "vbottom" chasing a fish half that length on a walleye rod...we chased it for over 20 minutes..I cranked the drag down tighter then I could pull it by hand..was like being hooked to a submarine...we chased it back and forth in a quarter mile stretch...I saw it three more times while we chased it but finally it dove for the bottom and popped the hook...we were both laughing and enjoyed the experience.....they say they are a fish of 10,000 casts...I was lucky to have had that opportunity and even though we couldn't land it we felt pretty fortunate for the opportunity...

Great read and congrats on having the opportunity to fight a monster. Process you don't have to spend big bucks on the latest & greatest rig to hook up with them. Even if I don't land the big ones I feel privileged to have fought them

My Dad hooked into something, and it was dragging him through the channel, while he was in his Kayak.

He was dragged North, and into the channel, between Cayo Coasta State Park, and Gasparilla, headed TOWARDS the Gulf.

He cut the line, never saw what it was, but he beamed, and did some chest thumping for hooking something huge.
