    Default Walleye on the River

Pat Day and I headed up to Saginaw River to finally do some ice fishing for Walleye. We left his house about 4:30 am and the temp was -9.
Meeting up with some friends near the Zilwaukee bridge, we headed out on 7” of good clear ice. Drilled holes and set up for the day.
We were using Rapala jiggin rap #7 tipped with a minnow in 26 feet of water.
It didn’t take long and Pat had one on, then another and so it went. He did let a few swim over to my hole and I also was catching walleye. The other guys in the party had similar success......lots of walleye being caught, problem was they were mostly under size. A lot were close so next year there should be a good crop. We all did catch a few keepers, and had a lot of fun.

I have no pictures just a upcoming video.....minus some swear words Walleye on the River

River is a nursery and has been for last couple years. I’ve never seen so many 9-12” walleye. I said last year next year will be great, well same thing I said yesterday when I left. Next year wil be tons of keepers. Crazy they lower limit and still can’t get many keepers. Years ago it was 14 14 3/4 141/2. Now 12 and so on. Great day catching terrible for getting meal. We cought over 25 to 1 keeper Not sure what’s up with river. Maybe these fish will grow. Lol. Still great to see. We are going to stick to Bay or Erie if all goes well with ice down there.

Nine years ago, my numbers were 100 fish caught for every one 15 inch keeper. The funny thing was a vast majority of those fish were nowhere close to 13 inches. Somewhere along the way, I lost interest going and catching all those fish with little to show for it.

9 years ago we were catching a lot of quality fish. Wasn’t nothing to limit with some great size 18-20+” fish with a 8 -10 lb in the mix. Now it’s crazy how many little fish in system. I’ve fished river for 25 years and by far the worst fo little fish. If you have a kid or a rookie take them there, they will have a blast and learn quick. I’m going to stick wiith Bay or Erie and get a chance at fish like this pic of my son on big hardwater.
