I'll call them.
So far, lot of places from the southeast all the way up to pinconning along 75 have emerald shiners from winter until about early summer. Probably easier access to them.

Emeralds don't take the heat so they sell fat heads during warmer weather. Might be tough finding them right now.

Rich, I think I heard the bait shop on Boon Road closed. Seems like the owner was sick or possibly passed away, I don't recall exactly. Also the bait shop next to the Coffee Cup restaurant (the Marathon station) closed. No place for minnows in Lake City.

the gas station at the first exit in Harrison used to sell minnows (across from burger king) right next to the freeway.

Why does that not surprise me? It is happening more and more and all too often these days.
Years ago, every major lake had a bait shop close by. They were usually intertwined with other businesses so they could have a continuous money stream. It wasn't unlikely to find the local bait shop also being the local garage, wrecker service, gas station, and laundry mat. I understand that they cannot compete with sales associated with online type of stuff but you really can't buy minnows online.

It is unfortunate but there really isn't much of a solution. I assume that if you want to fish Missaukee, you either have to drive to Lyman's or Pilgrim Village just to get bait. That is terrible.

Bait shops.....

I remember the one in the UP town I grew up, it was called Garden Bay Bait and Tackle. It was right on the Garden Creek and owned by a couple from Gladwin who retired and moved up. Glen and Opal Bogart was their names. Glen added an addition on to the side of his house for the bait shop and Opal more or less ran it as she was there all the time. You could launch your boat there and get a 5 gallon bucket of perch scaled too (yes we used to catch that many perch in the 70's & 80's) They always had minnows year round as well as a good supply of tackle. Glen was always busy trapping, hunting, fishing etc. he taught me how to be a "bear guide" and I loved being around him whenever I could.
As with most things, they had a great little mom and pop business until failing health caused them to sell and move. The people who bought it just didn't have the knack for it I guess and in short time it was gone. Last I knew the area doesn't have a bait shop, closest one I think is in Manistique and another in Escanaba. There was one for a short time at Garden Corners, but last I knew that building is now empty. It's a shame......look how big the Big Bay de Noc area of water is and all the fishing opportunities without a local bait shop.

Quick update, the one on boon rd is closed. They are just a contractor business. The marathon gas station in town sells bait now. They sell goldens, suckers, blues (spottail shiners) and pinheads (emeralds shiners).

It seems that many places, lymans including, only has emeralds for their perch and crappie fishing needs. Some will carry fathead minnows at the end of summer. Yes Rich, fathead deal much better with temperature changes than emeralds. They can even survive poor water quality very well. Perfect bucket bait. Seems the only place that reliably sells fathead minnows is the petshops. (The rosy red feeder fish for 10 to 16 cents a pop). But I'm pretty sure that is not something the dnr would be pleased with if anyone was caught using them. Even though the species is native to many Michigan lakes and streams.

Kipling has a bait shop. It is right next to the boat launch. It is called "Bayshore Resort Bait and Tackle". It is ran by two ladies. Last I heard, Kevin over at Sall Mar was only doing cabins and guiding. I'm not sure if they even have tackle in the store or if it is even open. But your right, the closet to the Garden Penn is Manistique. There "might" be bait at Garden Corners at "Foxy's Den" but I'm not sure.

Take your engle cooler and put your bait in that. Pickup a 5 dollar aquiriam bubbler from Meijer and plug it in at the cabin. Probably the best way to keep bait when NOT on the ice. As for being on the ice, a cheap six pack cooler. Drill a hole in the top and put a battery operated bubbler in it. Better than nothing!
