    Default First time visitor!

We are making our first ever trip to Michigan, staying in the vicinity of Traverse City. The journey begins Friday, and we will probably arrive Saturday. We will be spending the week, and I am excited! I would like input on any must do’s while in this area. We will be coming in our car, no boat or truck. That being said, we do have access to a couple of boats, as we are traveling with our daughter and SIL, and his sister and family live there. As far as fishing, I’m traveling light. A couple of rods and minimal tackle. I am bringing a fly rod, and have read of trout fishing in The Boardman River. Any pointers would be appreciated!

That's a nice area. You may want to check out the village of Leland. Kind of touristy but still cool. Sleeping Bear dunes is another cool place. The mouth of the Platte River is one of my familys favorites and there is a salmon hatchery in Honor that we visit whenever we're in the area. You can rent a tube and float the Platte River from the weir to the mouth. Old Mission Point north of TC is another of our regular stops.

If you can get on Grand Traverse Bay you can catch some real nice smallmouth bass. I fished a lot of the lakes in that area and Arbutus is one of my favorites. Bluegill, crappie, bass and pike. Spider Lake is in the same area, is harder to figure out, but the fish seem to run larger. Skegmog can be good at times for yellow perch and is just east of TC. Basic spinning gear will work. I know nothing about the trout in the Boardman River.

If you're into craft beer, there are tons of micro brewerys in the area. If you're up for a road trip, Mackinac City, Mackinac Bridge and St. Ignace are worth the trip. Check out the rest stop/ bridge over look on the north end of the bridge west of I-75. They have a neat display on the planning and building of the bridge. Don't forget to eat a pasty while you're there, it's a U.P. thing.

I'm sure you'll find plenty to do. Keep us posted on how your trip is going.

Steve drilled it with Boones Long Lake in.

I'm actually from an area about 30 minutes south of Traverse City. It was the place we went when you needed to go to "The Big Town"!

Boones is a great spot to eat and can get busy in the evenings. They have been known for their steaks. Years ago they also used to have all you can eat Shrimp night. I think dad and I each ate 4lbs one night!

Jerry nailed it with Leland and Sleeping Bear dunes. The drive along the lake from TC up towards Acme is also a great trip. If you are in to golf, the Jack Nickolous course (The Bear) and the Gary Player course (The Wolverine) are perfect courses. If the family likes beeches, there is tons of them up and down the Lake Michigan coast. It seems like every little town has something great to offer in the area from Traverse City all the way down to Ludington.

South Of Traverse City on M37 you have the Manistee river. Tubing, Kayaking, and canoe trips are offered right at the bridge in Sherman. Used to be Johnson's canoe livery but that was years ago. Great brown trout fishing, some rainbows, and a few walleye. Along with Pike, suckers, small mouth, and catfish. There is also tons of bank opportunities. Baxter bridge is south of Buckly and a good place to park and walk up stream. I could give you a few holes and pointers in that area.

Frankfort, Benzie, and Beulah are all nice areas on the coast and south of Traverse City.

Take a look at all the cities up and down the coast before you go. One of them will have a festival going on and they are always a fun time with lots of stuff to see and activities. There are tons of lakes, rivers, and streams to fish all over the area. It just really depends on where you want to go, what you want to fish for, if you have a boat, and how much time you will have.

Thanks for this info! As far as trout, would you recommend the Manistee over the Boardman? Naturally, I know nothing about either. As much as I love crappie fishing, I would prefer targeting another species while there. We have Smallies and Walleye, but nothing like what I’ve read about Michigan.

I have way more experience with the Manistee over the Boardman river. That would be the only reason I would say to fish the Manistee.

If you plan on doing so, I can give you directions (and bait selections) to enough areas to get you on some pretty decent fish if the weather cooperates.

I know many of these areas like my own back yard. I should, I skipped a ton of school to fish and hunt this area when I was a kid! Of course, the principle was usually with me as I was known as the guy that could put him on fish. Come to think of it, my favorite teacher and I used to "miss" school quite a bit because the turkey's were gobbling, or the trout were biting! And I dated the superintendants daughter whom I rabbit hunted with. Man, I just thought of something. I NEVER went to school! I did however ice fish for 5 days straight when I had a bad cold... another story, another time.

Let me know if that is something you are interested in and I'll put together a comprehensive bait list along with locations, holes, TOPO maps. Heck, I can even tell you which rock to cast to in some of these spots. The only thing I cannot do is catch the fish for you.

Shoot me a PM. Just as a reminder to type something up. I am out for the day and the information I am about to blow you up with cannot be done on my phone. I'll post all of the information in this thread. The PM would be the reminder for me to do so in the morning!
