    Default Line unspooling?

I am taking care of a friends old school reels (2 true temper 923c's, a Penn senator, 3/0 and another from France with no name) and a few of mine own (Penn peerless No 9 which I use trolling all the time, and a Sears levelwind).

Being that time of year when it's too hot to do anything outside, I decided today is the day to take the reels apart to check the parts, clean, repair and respool. All is easily managed with a fee tools and some creative ingenuity. But what about unspooling?

Respooling has is own problems, but there are many tools available to make your life easier to put new line on. Taking old line off involves scissors or knives held at weird angles and possibly dangerous angles, or pulling the line off by hand. Time consuming endeavors for sure.

My answer, your good old friend. The hand drill! With an old 9 inch nail or screw, your handy hand drill, and everyone's favorite, duct tape! You finally have a tool that is cheap, stores quickly, and makes clean up a breeze! I can go about my business checking my other reels while one is being unspooled.
And when you are done, the line covered nail is easy to toss. No birds nest!

I know you guys are really crafty too. Let me know what you think of mine, or show off your own ingenious diy inventions.Name: 20180630_143639.jpeg

Let's see, I've used a soda bottle and wrapped by hand, pulled line by hand into a 5 gallon bucket, tied it to a tree and took off with my side by side, tied it to the mailbox and drove off with the car (picked it all up afterwords), had hyper kids take off running with it, and used a drill. Make sure to save your old spools. You can build a chuck and the spool picks up more line.

I was thinking of affixing something to a bike wheel, put it on jacks, and have someone pedal. I have also thought of putting an old rim on my atv, put the rear end in the air, and spool on to that.

A red hot razor blade works good too.

FYI: do NOT ever get rid of those old Penn 203 and 209's. They are the best trolling reels ever built.

Just proves it, "Without duct tape our lives would just fall apart". Another good use of a toolbox mainstay. Thanks!
