    Aaron,

I'm the complete opposite in that regard as I hate watching people. I end up spending most of the day shaking my head and wishing I was not around stupid people!

I here this comment a lot: "I didn't see many nets flying today". I have a few answers I usually keep tp myself. I'll share them here as they are general and not directed at one person.

I didn't see many either, I concentrate on what I'm doing and don't worry about others.

I never saw a net all day other than mine. Course I never saw another boat all day.

I think too many guys put their nets in a vertical holder to showcase what they are doing. Most times no one will even know we netted a fish. Not because we are secretive but rather where we keep the net in the boat and how we do it.

That said, when snagging was legal, we used to run down to Tippy and watch the turd show. So I guess I can understand your amusement!

I have to have my net vertical and with a “Net Keeper”. I still do most of my fishing solo. I can’t take Steve with me on EVERY trip.......as my net man.

That net keeper gets laughed at by most, until I tell them net your own fish. There like huh, how?

It gets put in the vertical rod holder on the left side. Mostly cuz then I can reach for it and know exactly where it’s at, without looking.

Austin & I have “Fake Fought, and Fake Net Kings” @ Holland a few times. Nothing more funny hat people lining up behind us........

Truth fully, a big King turns my boat into a circus if I am by myself. BUT, it’s my circus.........

I get what your saying as well. If I could fish the DR during the week, it would be great.

However schedule and kids dictate my fishing times. If I have to be surrounded, I should at least get some amusement.....

    Chapter 2:

So why is our charter captain not successful outside of the areas he knows best? To find out why, we need to go back to the example from when I was younger.

Remember that I said we didn’t have electronics. We had no way of knowing the bottom contour, structure, depth, or even the water temperature. Our success hinged on going to places we had previously caught fish. We didn’t know the reasons WHY those fish were there. Just the fact that they were there. Had we been able to know and understand the reasons WHY those fish were there (at that time of year) we would have been better able to cross reference this with a different body of water! Sounds simple enough right?

Here is a better example. You have two different fishing teams that are getting ready to compete at an entirely new body of water. It is a place they have never been to before. Team one looks over maps before they arrive at the area and familiarizes themselves with the layout of the land. They locate areas of interest or places to try based on their knowledge from other bodies of water. They know on their home lake that, when the sun is high in the middle of summer, the fish often retreat to cover. Reading maps gives them a better knowledge of where they can expect to find cover in the form of weed beds. It helps them identify long flats that potentially hold these weed beds and note their location in relation to deeper water. They can begin to form a plan on where to begin. Team two utilizes their fish finder that has great mapping features of the lake. Unfortunately, it is rather small in size and doesn’t allow them to see the full picture.

During pre-fishing, team one fishes an area that has two sunken islands and a trough that runs between them. On the tops of these islands are weed flats. Trolling between the two they notice that the fish are laying on the back side and just inside of the weed edge. They quickly catch a fish and document the bait and depth it was caught. At this time, and with their knowledge of the area based on the maps, they begin to look for other similar structure areas on the lake. Finding three, they quickly head to the second area. At area number two they have similar success with a similar bait and a similar depth. They pick up and move to location three. They continue to do this until the similar areas have been exhausted.

Team two on the other hand locates a few fish and continues to fish the area really hard in the hopes to find that special bait. Unfortunately the sun in the sky is changing, and the heat is baring down. In other words, the elements are changing by the minute. Further fishing in this area is counterproductive.

Team one continues this throughout the week and can easily put together a plan on where the fish are located at certain times of day, what structure they prefer, wind direction, and water temperature. They can account for all other elements. On day one of the tournament they will know the weather patterns and based on that can select their areas accordingly. Team two on the other hand has put all their eggs in one or two baskets. They didn’t search out to find other areas. Why? They really didn’t look close enough to find out the reasons WHY the fish were in certain spots. If they knew the reasons why, they could have been able to find other locations that were similar in nature.

Getting back to our charter captain. He has the tools necessary to be successful in other locations both in Saginaw and other bodies of water. He just needs to understand the WHY. Why are the fish located where they are at certain times of year? What are they holding to? Are they in the area because of a specific food source, spawning ground, or structural change? If so, what other areas on your map have similar features? Knowing all of this will help our young captain when he moves on to other bodies of water. He should be able to look at a map and use his knowledge from those other areas to produce a good starting point!

I was asked last weekend how I can pick a spot in an almost endless mass of water. How do I narrow it down? The answer is listed above. Based on my knowledge of where the fish should be located at this time of year, and my experience on certain bodies of water, I should be able to study a map and find similar features, contours, or terrain similarities that will give me a better starting point.

Walleyes are all the same. There isn’t much of a difference between a Houghton Lake walleye and a Lake Erie walleye except for the forage they eat. They all have the same tolerances and tendencies. Knowing how they act, what they like during certain times of year, and WHY they like to be in certain areas is 90% of the battle. The location of the lake and its size has zero bearing.

I enjoy challenging myself by going to different bodies of water. As a kid I wanted to catch fish. I didn’t have the electronics necessary to learn new locations. I had to rely on past experience and memory in order to have fun and catch a few fish. Now, with the internet, maps available in every location, an fishing electronics that have more technologies than the Mercury NASA project, we have all the tools at our fingertips to actively find and target fish on any particular body of water.

I worked for Hoyles Marina (now L/B.M) for over 4 years. I fished almost everyday after cutting grass. I spent hours at Franks buying HotNTots in every color they had. They didn't have a lot of the different baits they have now. I used Offshore boards and ran them just like Rich said. I caught lots of fish. I didn't keep a lot, 2-3 to eat. I had a blast. Bought a 21' Trophy Pro. Eventually the competitive nature of it got to me. People being stupid at the ramp, on the Bay, and just in general. Everybody trying to out do the other guy to get their "limit". The fun went out of it for me. And I moved up North. I fished Salmon out of Oscoda. That got the same way, so I sold my boat and concentrated on the inland lakes. Fishing to me is not about a "limit" it's the hunt, the time spent with people you love, it's being on the water,. A "limit" is overrated, save some for tomorrow.
