Saginaw River could be your best bet to get your master angler, Steve. Lots of huge flatheads and drum caught there this time of year.

I have no doubt that was a master angler.

The biggest drum I've ever seen came out of the Saginaw. I caught it while Kevin and I were tournament fishing. My board is 32 inches and the fish was way over it. I chucked it back because we had crap to do. 10 minutes later I had the ah ha moment of what I should have done! I did end up with another later in the day that ended up being the 5th biggest taken in Michigan that year.

Did the same on channel cats. Worked for 2 years to live that down. Even carryed one in the livewell that I was sure made the cut (it didn't). Then, as luck would have it again, the master angler came during a tournament with my dad. That was in Alpena. I've caught 3 master angler fish I turned in while tournament fishing. Unfortunately, none were walleye!

I did however catch 9 master angler walleye in one afternoon! All lived to fight another day.

It’s like deer hunting for a trophy buck, if it happens fine if not that’s okay too.

I’ve been so close a bunch of times.....I’m happy to see others get them.....apparently too happy Uncle Don's coffeehouse 2018

After some conversation last night between Jimmy Kevin & I, we are pretty sure that it was.........

Some one measured it, Jimmy Asked for a tape measure, I found one, Kevin measured, and it was either 40.5 or 41.5.

We looked over a picture of it on the ground, and measured the cracks last night where it was on the ground, and it was 39.75 roughly with a kink in the fish.
So it was probably the 41.5. Minimum is 29, it was WAY over that, and roughly 10# short of the overall record. (After looking this morning at the stats). It may have weighed a bit more if we had left the other 10# Cat in its mouth that it had eaten and partially digested.

I never really have done anything other than say DANG, that's big, for any fish. Submitting for MA was not on my mind, and am not sure I can submit it with just the photos I have and no measurements of the full fish next to a tape. I just know it was HUGE, and Kevin was afraid to net it........

It was only at Steve's insistence, and my yapper, where I PROMISED to submit the Walleye that he net. That fish was submitted.

That is a huge one! I'm amazed of the size of the one in it's gullet too!

I've never been concerned with what I caught before but, it started making it a ton more enjoyable when you caught a non target species while fishing. It gives you something to shoot for when you do see that white bass, white perch, or other on the line while you are fishing for something completely different.

Now I keep track of how many awards that people in my boat have caught and submitted. Just a fun factor. We can't always catch a big "target" fish, but we can still make catching those other fish fun and meaningful. Besides, the patches they come out with each year are unique!
