Thread: See, I do work

Nice looking barn, Steve. Every day when I head to the job site I think to myself " I wish I worked in a factory". Just kidding, even though the body protests more than it did a few years ago, I still enjoy giving my customers something that will last for decades. I'm finishing up a job in Stockbridge that included drywall, 600 sf pine ceiling, 900 sf laminate floor, new windows and doors, trim and an oak stairway system. Next up is changing the floor plan on a fairly new ( 15 years old ) house, moving the stairway, moving the kitchen from the front to the back, moving the laundry from the basement to the main level, and if time permits, a new roof. Then it's off to Louisiana to catch crappie. I do love my job!

You're right Jerry, at the end of the day I like to look at what my hands created.....I had a job as a project manager putting in 450 miles of fiber optic cable for a year and a half, and that was the worst time of my life! Great money, great benefits, fly me home every other weekend, paid expenses, truck, fuel, etc...... but all my job consisted of was managing 30 guys on 8 crews, collecting progress reports and email to corporate. At the end of the day, no satisfaction just go back to a motel and wait to begin the next day.

Our bodies hurt at the end of the day, but the immense pride in creating someone's dream far out weighs it. It's also gratifying to go past something you built many years ago and its still standing proud like a monument you've created.

You know it was only a matter of time before either Rich, or myself got online, and uttered the words.....

"I hate my job..............."

Well, maybe I should not speak for Rich, but I know he faces allot of the same challenges that I do.

Its not so much I hate it, but I hate what its become, its not the "Same" as there have been many management changes over the last bit of time @ my current employer.

I would/could gladly do it some where else, for someone who appreciated it......Slowly working on that, as i need to use caution.

I spent 5 hours last Sunday on a project for some one else, and loved every minute of it. I was/am probably more excited about it then the other person.

The sad part of being in IT, is that I will NEVER be able to see a physical structure of anything I have accomplished at work.

I think that is why I probably have more pride in my garage (Cough, 3 years to complete) BUT I did it. I tore down the old, I used a 10# hammer to break up the concrete to dispose if it.
I put in the truss's the walls, the Cripples, the roof, the electric, the siding, hung the doors, etc. I come home to see something I have DONE, but it has slowly worn off.


I know Rich doesn't like his yard, and talked about astro turf.
I HATE mowing lawn too, but when I do I LIKE it because I can see something I have done & accomplished, even though its as simple as cutting grass.

So coming from an IT guy, I envy you both.

Back to the Barn, while I admire your work......

I like the bottom siding/what ever it is, is that for snow? protection form elements, vs siding all the way down?

Going to have to get some pointers on the post frame construction. my next (Someday) project is a garage out back.

OH, and don't get me started on that, this is so stupid......

Where I live, I have to get a building permit, OK, no problem. BUUUTTTTTt, because I have a "Attached" garage, any "Out-building" can only 10% of the lot size. So I have to apply, have neighbor approval for a (I think its called) variance.

NOW, if my garage was not attached, I could build a building as LARGE as I wanted, and as MANY as I wanted. 2 3, 94 4 building etc, just not attached.

You hit the nail on the head. Been saying for 20 plus years that at the end of the day, I could fix 100 things and put out 100 fires and you see none of it. Spent the last week working on new systems untested on our network. After getting them operational, I spent the last 3 hours putting together an indepth, detail oriented user guide for everyone else to properly implement these devices. And I hate every minute of it. I've tried to pay people to push me down the stairs but so far, no joy. I even threatened to hang myself with a USB cable but that didn't work either!

I can however tell you that I have a 12X12 cabin (ok deer blind) 14 feet in the air with wrap around stairs and 1300 worth of custom windows that I am about 75% done with. My lawn still isn't mowed. Not just because I hate doing it but because I don't like moving the 11 bow targets I have out. I did look at it last night and say "man I should mow that"... then I laughed, went inside, picked up the bow, and Abby and I went out and shot. This morning, momma deer and her little one were back by the barn eating grass and clover. Now I'm glad I didn't mow it!

Aaron, first of all, you throw like a girl.

Secondly, I think the bottom portion is just for eye appeal, something to break up the horizontal lines. Looks like vinyl board and baton but I could be wrong. You see that wainscoat on a lot of steel sided buildings.

While I wouldn't trade jobs with you, this isn't all fame and fortune. Today I was working on a pole barn that a tree came down on. The home owner told me the overgrown trees and brush had been cut down and the damaged roof osb and trusses had been removed, all I need to do is put it back together. With high hopes and a happy heart, I pulled onto the site. Having the brush cut down meant he cut it shin high and left the cut off part laying where it fell. Having the plywood off and trusses removed meant he dropped everything either inside the barn or around the perimeter, right where I had to work. To top it off, the coons have found his barn and decided it would make a perfect toilet. The first couple of hours today were spent picking up shingles, osb, chunks of truss material and coon crap and hauling it to the dumpster. Oh, and muttering some choice words every time I found a "cut down " tree with my shin. But at the end of the day I could see what I had accomplished so it worked out just fine.

Rich, I don't mind mowing. Usually 1 1/2 hrs and I'm done. For me that's just about right. any more and it would be too much. Don't mind canning 'maters either.

No construction crew tonight so corner trim and window trim is out. I'll run hurricane clips and some electrical tonight. Yes, gotta have solar.


But, I guess when you get to see stuff like this, it is worth it.
